Symphony X Song Tournament: Vote for the Best

Paradise Lost
Heretic
Divine Wings
When All is Lost

That second one was probably the most difficult choice so far, but I think "Heretic" is their best attempt at doing a real metal song. They have done songs similar to "A Lesson Before Dying" later on that have turned out better.

Paradise Lost — Easy choice

A Lesson Before Dying — Heretic :yuk:

DWOT — Actually a tie for me, but I think it's fairer to let the epic win. :)

Oculus Ex Inferni — Actually another tie. But I'm letting Oculus take this vote because I'm into that shit.

Man Oculus is one of the best preludes/interludes SX has ever done, it's like a mini movie soundtrack. i regard it as one of my favorite SX tracks, can't believe how few votes it's getting.

Agreed. For me it's the best prelude. Very epic, very professionally done (and produced). I love the way the guitar and drums are blended with the orchestra here. Kind of unique. And Romeo really masters the choir section.

5/5

Paradise Lost
Heretic
DWoT
When All is Lost

Paradise Lost is a pretty song and easily beats a short interlude. The second one took a lot more meditation, but I just can't help thinking that most of A Lesson Before Dying feels a bit lifeless somehow, and it's not all on Tyler either. Fallen is really good, but... yeah. Oculus Ex Inferni was the one intro-type thing that I really, really didn't want to vote against, but in the end it's not like I'm going to pick it over one of the best tracks on Iconoclast either.

Paradise Lost, never thought much of Sonata..
A Lesson Before Dying - I don't like the vocals on either one, but musically I like ALBD more.
Divine Wings, very close since Fallen kicks ass too!
Oculus Ex Inferni, also pretty close.

1. Paradise Lost. Easy choice. PL was the song which really got me into SX, and so, it has always been one of my favourites. Awesome chorus, lots of nice work from Pinnella, and Allen shines as always. Never cared too much about Sonata.

2. A Lesson Before Dying. The intro is beautiful, and it has some decent parts here and there. And I would rather pick their first “epic” though an average one, before a modern metal song like Heretic.

NB: Am I the only one who thinks the part at 9:44 reminds about the intro to Iconoclast??

3. Divine Wings. A Neo-classical masterpiece from start to finish. Just supreme. So many awesome parts throughout the song….

Fallen is great though, one of my favourites from V. That intro is SO badass…in fact, the whole song is badass; I love Romeo’s crunchy guitar playing in the verses…and the solo section is great. Kind of a shame this came up against Divine Wings…

4. When All is Lost: Oculus is not a bad opener, but WAIL gets this. True, the lyrics are sometimes a bit cheesy, and the intro seems a bit “traditional”, but this tune is one of the best from Iconoclast. I love the pedaling piano-line at 1:27, typical Pinnella playing such awesome melodies ;)

Like Reign in Madness I find this also to have a quite strong chorus, and a great interlude; the Hammond organ-part at 4:40 is really cool, and the part afterwards (5:20) shows that they still are capable of making magic; beautiful interaction between the guitar and the piano, and I love the synth which comes in with the bass and the drums.

Then there is a beautiful solo by Romeo, before….well, I’ve got to agree about the second solo, and I have felt this since the first time I heard the song; it doesn’t fit, I feels like kind of an anti-climax, like Romeo just wanted to throw in some more shredding just for the sake of it. But otherwise, it’s a really good song.

Results are up.

Paradise Lost beats Sonata 11-3
A Lesson Before Dying beats Heretic 9-5
The Divine Wings of Tragedy beats Fallen 13-1
When All is Lost beats Oculus ex Inferni 8-6

This was quite an interesting round. When All is Lost beat Oculus in the closest victory we've seen in quite a while, and DWOT almost won unanimously, thanks to Eyeballkid (although Fallen was definitely not one of the songs I expected to lose in the first round). Also, all my choices advanced once more.

And now for the next four.

Communion and the Oracle
I like absence of light, but communion is better.

Eyes of Medusa
Not a huge fan of either song, but medusa's chorus (which kind of sounds like a bridge to me) is pretty cool. "aggressive sx" done right :)
there's a pretty cool break in medusa too (at 3:45). I actually thought that wasn't part of the song.
anyway, I don't really like Taunting.

Lady of the Snow
one of the best SX songs. would win over most songs.

A Winter's Dream pt 2
the relic is pretty good, as are most songs on Twilight, but a winter's dream just barely edges it out.

Wow...you just had to pair Absence of Light with Communion, didn't you? Such a criminally underrated song that will now be swept under the rug once more! DAMNIT!

Now that I got that out of my system, my first vote goes to:

Communion and the Oracle
Taunting the Notorious (I really hate Eyes of Medusa. Also, if you eliminate the double bass, Notorious sounds like something that would have been track 1 on an old Dio or Dio Sabbath album)
Lady of the Snow
The Relic

1. Communion and the Oracle (I love every song from V, but Communion was the one that hit me like a ton of bricks and made me realize "These guys are unbelievably good".)

2. Eyes of Medusa (I don't really care for the studio version of this song, though I do like the live version. A little too bland for my taste, and I don't think the orchestral part fits very well, but I do prefer it more than Taunting the Notorious)

3. Electric Messiah (Lady of the Snow has grown on me a little bit, and I do like the Asian elements present, but I can't help but feel that it's ultimately Candlelight Fantasia 2.0 only not as strong. Electric may not be one of the best songs on IC, but I'll be damned if it didn't get me headbanging when I saw it live)

4. The Relic (Very underrated song, very classic power metal sound with a more prominent neo-classical influence. The solo is also really cool. A Winter's Dream pt. II is really good too, but I think I prefer the Relic a bit more)

1. Communion and the Oracle (love both songs)
2. Eyes of Medusa (don't like either much)
3. Lady of the Snow (easily)
4. The Relic (is a diamond (underrated indeed), Winter's Dream is an unpolished diamond)

Communion And The Oracle(though I always thought that Absence Of Light was very cool and maybe my favorite ending to a SX song)
Eyes Of Medusa(live version is better)
Lady Of The Snow(really among the best and beautiful in their entire catalog)
A Winter's Dream Pt. II(The Relic is an awesome and underrated song, but so is this and it comes out the stronger of the two. That ooh ooh bridge section gave me such goosebumps when I first heard it. Why the fuck don't they write stuff like this anymore?!?)

Communion
Medusa
Lady of the Snow
Relic

1. Absence is a solid track with a great main groove, but Communion is one of the best songs the band has ever written. So yeah.

2. Medusa is average, but it sure beats a filler track from the debut. Also, that polymetric part with the keyboard and the chugga-chugga riff gets me every time!

3. I don't even really like Lady of the Snow all that much (I agree with UnholyCrusada about it being a weaker Candlelight Fantasia), but it's awesome when compared to the non-symphonic filler garbage that is Electric Messiah. Why the band thinks that song is good enough to be played live is beyond me.

4. I like Winter's Dream (both parts), but Relic really is underrated. Even as someone who isn't a huge fan of cheesy power metal, I love this song! The interlude in the middle with the groovy bass is awesome. I also love the triplet feel throughout much of the song, which isn't something that the band does often.

Communion and the Oracle — One of the best things they've ever recorded.
The Eyes of Medusa — I just love this song. So dark and haunting. It's "not pretty", in a good way (lol). Agreed with Phanto's comment, "aggressive SX done right"; also about the cool break.
Lady of the Snow — Another one of my top favorites. Easy choices so far.
A Winter's Dream — Both are good songs. Love the Chorus in The Relic. Winter's Dream is overall slightly sweeter.

Communion and the Oracle
This song is pretty much perfect. Love Absence of Light too, but Communion is a standout song in a standout album.

Taunting the Notorious
Yeehaw!

Lady of the Snow
No real contest here.

Winter's Dream Pt. II
Winter's Dream is one of my favorite SX songs. Even one half of it easily takes it.

1. Communion and The Oracle. Absence is great, but Communion is just superb. Not just for Symphony X, it´s one of my favorite songs ever.
2. The Eyes of Medusa. All that I can said about this duel has been already said.
3. Lady of the Snow. One of the most beautiful songs of SX versus that song?!. No contest.
4. Winter´s Dream Pt. II. It´s also one of my favorite SX songs. But The Relic will be a difficult opponent as I can see.

Communion and the Oracle, though Absence of Light is of course very good.

The Eyes of Medusa.

Lady of the Snow, I don't really like the song that much, but Lady of the Snow is more interesting than Electric Messiah...

A Winter's Dream pt., a very tight duel though.
