I'm often doing whole parts (if the beat isn't changing much and fairly simple). if the drumbeat changes dramatically I'll do those in sections (which are usually 4 or 8 bars or something).
the "move back before editing" only really works for me if BD is set to 100%, lately I prefer keeping much of the original feel though, so I won't move the track before I start BDing...but it really depends on the drummer and style.
Zeronaut: if you get flams on the cymbals because they're played before the kick for example and BD cuts at the kick it might help to take a look at your trigger pad and change it.
Usually in those cases I'll just move the marker up to the cymbal hit for the BDing and move the kick tracks seperately later
