The Black Metal Thread

Damn right. There's nothing remotely grim or necro about Primordial. They don't have traditional Black Metal aesthetics nor are they satanic. Hence they are not Black Metal. Get it right

yeah damn because they don't paint their faces or believe in satan they are not black metal?

Uhm, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't black metal a MUSIC genre? or was it a religious subdivision? or a fashion statement?

That reminds of a douchebag fighting about how Mercylful Fate is black metal, he's like "don't be ignorant of course MF is a black metal band, it's about the ideology not the music!!" and I wanted to slap his face. And that guy fronts a black metal band

Edit: oh and http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=400

This is the black metal thread, not the "only purely satanic traditional raw before 1996 black metal thread"

Black metal is a music genre BUT ideology and unfortunately, image go hand in hand with the genre, especially the second wave which came out of Scandinavia in the late 80's early 90's. It was about rebellion, the adversary to death and thrash metal, enemy of organised religion etc.
Being from Ireland, and in the same age group as the lads from Primordial plus having played numerous gigs with them over the years, I have witnessed their progression. They started out as a BM band, first time I saw them was in 1993 in Cork. Alan (Nemtheanga) was the one decked in corpsepaint and holding a candle whilst performing. Over the years, their progression has crosses genres and I would say that they have more in common NOW with Maiden and Hammerheart era Bathory plus a lot of classic metal bands than Mayhem, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth etc.... So are they black metal?? Well DanLights, if metal archives says then it must be true :kickass: (sarcasm)

Anyway back on topic,

some more homegrown bands

plus, one of my favourites

I just got this in the post yesterday, it is the first blind purchase of a record for a very long time.
I'm still absorbing it atm, but its sounds pretty cool so far.

tbph I didn't like arisen from the ashes at all. but dodens evangelium rapes.
check out ofermod, funeral mist, and malign for more swedish orthodox bm. tbh funeral mist started that entire movement back in 98.

totally forgot darkspace. also check out coldworld.

whaaa, it's like one of the nicest kick sounds ever? nice and deep and boomy and natural

and lol @ tarbh666.
I guess Gorguts aren't death metal then since they strayed from the ORIGINAL DEATH METAL FORUMLAZZZZZZ and actually tried to do something new with the genre?
Get off your high horse man, I don't even like BM that much but anyone can see that people like you restrict a genre that could grow so much more if it were given the fuckin' chance to.

Ya whatever dude, never said to be one for restricting a genre, just stating the obvious. Check this link http://www.facebook.com/primordialofficial#!/primordialofficial?v=info and tell me where it says they are a Black Metal band??? Now, I hope this Primordial debate is laid to rest and someone fires out a few more bands, some really good ones listed so far.

 yeah i does have a nice boom to it definatly, but the attack in the first half of the track really grinded my gears, stuck out like a sore thumb way too much,

as for the primordial, thing they may not be full fledged black metal but they definatly have an influance of black in there, from some of the atmosphereic riffs to some of alans vocals its undeniable and if going by ideology and image they still do to and extent as alan puts on corpsepaint to perform, and i believe hes a huge anti christian, not saying hes a satanist, but he aint christian,

though i think the image and ideology is now defunkt in the genre, works for some bands, but im not guna say a band arent black metal cause they dont do these things, nachtmystium and krallice, both great bands dont think either corpse up (anymore in nachtmystiums case) nor express their religeous views through their music christian or not, its a genre of music and one of my favourites, and for me its about the music being good or not

I'm not one to categorize bands and genres and speak for strict rules, but you guys have to understand black metal is one of the few musical subcultures that isn't "all about the music", you know. Yeah, maybe it wasn't born like that or maybe some people don't want to submit to that, but that's pretty much what the second wave of Norwegian black metal made it. You can always take a crap in a kettle, throw in a potato and call it a stew, but people will be looking at you funny.

It kinda reminds me of the trend here a few years ago, when somehow lots of "christian black metal" bands were suddenly showing up. Christian black metal? Come on.

If this isn't proper BM, I sincerely do not give a shit.

I do think krallice have some alright moments, however they aren't really black metal in my eyes.
They may have fast tremolo picking, and black metal-esque vocals, but in terms of vibe they really have nothing in common....and vibe is key when it comes to BM.
I wouldn't say it has to be satanic, but there is a certain feeling/perspective of modern humanity that has to be conveyed.
In a way it is very ambiguous, but I think most people who "get" black metal really appreciate whatever it is over everything, even actual musical content.
It's very hard to articulate, for me at least, but in my mind it is a very definite......"thing" for lack of a better word.

yeah christian black metal i find is something truelt quite ridiculas, i mean im not one for careing much about a bands image and ideologies for the most part, especially within black metal but christian black metal is a tad idiotic, as Martin Walkyier said "what do they do build churches?"

solefalds linear scafold, now thats a great album too, some fantastic recommendations pouring out on this thread
