The Black Rose Immortal "promise"

didn't they play Black Rose Immortal on those 4 special shows in the states? The shows they should have filmed and released on DVD :p I'm pretty sure they played it then (in 2006 I guess).

i think i remember that mike said, they played every song from Morningrise live, but not TNATSW. that was before the last tour ...
mh, seems like they played black rose ... dunno.

there is no vid of it or sometehing.
I remember Mikael saying that they played BRI in a bar one time and that it was too long.

They did not.

Didn't Mikael say that he doesn't even remember how to play it?

I'm sure Mike could relearn the song if he really wanted to. At this point in their careers, however, and with as much material as they have - I honestly doubt BRI will ever get played in it's full entirety, unless they do another 3hr+ "Evening With" show. And even then I honestly couldn't see it being played.

I'd much rather hear them play more than 3 songs from GR, seeing as they still haven't played Harlequin Forest or Beneath the Mire live. (I understand why they haven't tried the soft tracks yet, but those two and Wreath deserve some play)!

There are plenty of bass fills on Ghost Reveries that sound similar to that. Listen closely to Ghost of Perdition, for example, and you'll hear them. It's called, mixing things up and playing outside the box of root notes. I understand the "disdain", if you want to call it that, for things like the end of The Apostle in Triumph (where the bass carries the song), but little fills here and there of interesting bass parts is not going to hurt the big monster of Opeth imo. That's why I'd love to see Martin mixing it up more on this record (Ghost Reveries was a huge step-up imo, especially from Deliverance where I really couldn't hear anything but root notes with the occasional fill or two.)

I can see from Mikael's perspective.. my bassist thinks he's the next Flea and whenever I write something really melodic he tries to funk it up and I just bury my head in my hands.

Ohh yeahh.. and I don't think they're ever going play Black Rose Immortal.

What would be the purpose? Completly different band line-up, and upcoming short sets. Not going to happen, I think

nice to see the Inferno '03 'Advent' again - after all, I was there :D And the next concert I saw them, they played 'April Ethereal'. Which means that I only miss 'The Twilight is my Robe', 'The Moor' and 'Ghost of Perdition' and I've seenb all my fave Opeth tunes live.. hehe.

Let's see---these are the tracks I've heard Opeth play live. If everybody chips in with songs they've heard live we will soon have whittled down which songs Opeth have never played live.

So..let's remember..I have heard:

Advent
Deliverance
A Fair Judgment
April Ethereal
Godhead's Lament
The Drapery Falls
Windowpane
In my time of need

lol cant remember more
Demon of the Fall

By "musical direction", I meant the prominence and uniqueness of the bass. I'm not saying it was better or worse, just that the bass lines have taken a different direction.

As for Johan wanting to make everything funk, I thought he was more into classical stuff? Or at least that he never liked metal. Meanwhile, Mendez says on the Opeth site that his favorite musician is Jaco Pastorius, whose works need no explanation. I guess Mendez likes stuff other than metal, but ultimately is willing to add to the sound without directing to it.

Then again, Axe commented that he had to listen to Mendez more than anyone to keep a steady beat. Whatever, my post sucks.

On the 2nd night in 06 in Melbourne, they played the start of Face of Melinda and stopped Mike said "next time" then they played a few BRI riffs from around the 17 minute mark; the "dusk shuffle across the fields" part. Not everyone realized, but I remember it clearly, Mike smiled and said maybe that next time too. Pretty sure he was just teasing but I wouldn't put it past them to play it. All was forgiven for the teasing as they went pretty much straight into Leper.

Yeah in Sydney, same tour Mike played the 'dusk shuffle' part as well; ha highlight of the night. He said something along the lines of 'does anybody know Black Rose Immortal?'. Ahh what a guy, best value.

Mendez has done nothing but improve Opeth's sound.

He is one of the contributing factors to why this band sounds as good as it does. He gets better every album and from hearing Heir Apparent, he looks to continue his dominance on Watershed.

Fuck the haters.
