The concerts thread

Saw Dispirit on Saturday. Good, dark, blackened doom from the guy from Weakling. Very slow, atmospheric and moody. The venue was filled with fog and the only lights were red lights coming from behind the band. You could basically only see the band members profiles. Anyway, a good but short set.

Didn't get to see the other bands, because my friend was basically only willing to stay for Dispirit, but we did run into Dave Edwardson from Neurosis, which was pretty cool. Very nice and personable guy.

Saw Wolves in the Throne Room and Wolvserpent a few days ago in glasgow. I wasnt that happy with WITTR's set list but it was a lot longer than the one last year so i guess it was worth it. The volume of smoke and insence was pretty smothering though. Wolvserpent were amazing live. I had listened to them before but the awesomeness doesnt come across on the cd. Unfortunately some asshole stole their gear after the show.

I saw Opeth and Katatonia earlier this month. Opeth put on an unusual but still enjoyable set. They shied away from all their death metal material, so it was definitely a unique experience. I didn't get to hear all my favorite songs, but I really respect that they chose a set that they really wanted to play. An artist should be allowed to perform their more artsy material even if they're not all crowd favorites.

I don't think they're moving away from metal, but after a couple decades can't they take a break for one album and one tour?

I agree that a band should be able to play whatever they feel like live, but there's no way that Opeth's clean songs are more artistic or artsy than their metal stuff. In fact, the compositions are typically (though not always) more streamlined and conventional.

And I recall reading that Mikael said the band would no longer play any of their heavier material live any more. Hopefully that's wrong, or he'll change his mind.

I see what you're saying, but I feel like that there's something more immediately accessible about their metal stuff than there is about the cleaner tracks. I really like Throat of Winter, but it took me more listens to appreciate it than Ghost of Perdition. I think that's generally true with the new album as well. It may not be as complex in terms of song structure, but it takes more critical listening to appreciate the nuance than their heavier material.

The Opeth and Katatonia show last night was amazing. All my fav songs from TGCD were played, some stuff from other albums, and they also played Ghosts of the Sun and Evidence, Evidence is probably my favorite song of theirs. So that was a jizzworthy set for me. I've been waiting to see Opeth for the last 7-8 years so it was pretty emotional for me. Not gonna lie, I teared up a bit during Face of Melinda. I ended up getting the set-list after the show so I was really stoked. And I liked the new songs live a lot better than hearing them the first time on the album, so I'm gonna have to give them some more listens for sure. All in all, probably one of the best nights of my life.

Last night I saw Mastodon/Dillinger Escape Plan/Red Fang @ The Wiltern in Hollywood. Red Fang was cookie cutter relapse records sludge...Its a dime a dozen, wasnt impressed at all...By The time Dillinger went on I was so fucked I could barely pay any attention...Good thing I sobered up by the time Mastodon went on. This was my 3rd time seeing them and by far the most impressive. Played for almost 2 hours straight and played a lot of great songs. :kickass:

So a couple of my friends know Mitch Harris (from Napalm Death), and he was in Vegas since he has family here, but I was hanging over at my friends with a few others, and he came over, and jammed with my friend on drums for like 10 minutes, it was awesome.

Anyone live in Ontario Canada?!

I'm going to see Tool at the JLC in London on January 26th, and the day after I'm seeing LOG at the Phoenix in Toronto. Then in Feburary I'm seeing Megadeth for GiganticTour at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton.

I've seen all these bands at least once (if not more), but every time I do- they keep getting better and better! :D

In the past I've seen King Diamond, Dimmu Borgir, Devil Driver, Slipknot, In Flames, The Bled, Lamb of God, 3 inches of Blood, Fear Factory, Chimaira, As I Lay Dying, & Trivium.

Next show coming up I've got tickets to is the Metal Alliance tour in a couple of months. Devil Driver's headlining, then also playing is Dying Fetus, Job for a Cowboy, The Faceless, 3 inches of blood, Impending Doom, & wretched. Pretty stoked.

This is going to be fucking epic:
