The "First Album You Heard Is Your Favorite" theory

It's true for me on a few albums, but I think it's only because I was lucky enough to hear their best record, not because it was the first thing I heard, therefore I like it best. Anyway...

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Venom - Black Metal
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Slayer - Hell Awaits
Reverend Bizarre - In The Rectory

Thats really all I can think of.

Don't really agree. Of these bands, my first and then favorites are these:

Bjork
1st) Debut
Fave) Vespertine :kickass:

Hey, nobody said they all had to be Metal!

Indeed! My favorite Bjork is Debut. I think its wonderful.
I also like the sound track she did for "Dancer in the Dark".

Erh, I dunno, sometimes its true...
I cant really name examples as my memory is pretty fucked up of my early years of metal.

But for the sake of arguement, the first W.A.S.P. full length I got my hands on was the Last Command but their debut is my fav.
The first Slayer I heard was Reign in Blood and my fav is Show no Mercy or Hell Awaits.
I wish I could remember what the first Maiden album I heard was...

oh and Holy Diver was the first Dio album I bought, it might be my favourite but I'm not sure, the first 3 are evil or divine, I cant decide...

I think your "back cataloging" comment is very key here. I find it applies more to bands that I discovered somewhere in the middle of their discography and had to go back through a slew of past albums.

If you discover a band "as they are happening", the theory is less likely to apply because you're kind of riding along with them as they progress and improve their crafts. In that instance, a band is much more likely to release your favorite album long after you first heard them.

That's exactly what I was getting at.

Eh, the theory needs more work and needs to be narrowed down. :Smug:

 Just like any theory, there are tons of variables to consider. And with music being such an individual taste thing, there's prolly way too many variables to make a comprehensive theory.

TSO has a great point here, I think it highly depends on WHEN you're discovering a band.

Otherwise it doesn't really work for me, even though I still have a soft spot for a few underrated albums which were the first I heard, such as "I'm a Rebel" from Accept, "Dead Winter Dead" from Savatage or "Twilight Time" from Stratovarius.

The three of us noticed that many of our favorite albums from our favorite classic bands are the FIRST album we heard by that band.

What's your experience?

Nice topic, sorry I jump a bit late :D

Well for me it does apply and it does not, so let's see:

Apply

Iron Maiden - "Piece Of Mind"
Judas Priest - "Defenders Of The Faith"
Riot - "Thundersteel"
Deep Purple - "Perfect Strangers"
Yngwie Malmsteen - "Trilogy"
Rush - "2112"
Blind Guardian - "Imaginations From The Other Side"
Coroner - "Mental Vortex"
Metallica - "Master Of Puppets"
Nightwish - "Angels Fall First"
Skyclad - "Vintage Whine"
Testament - "Low"

Does not apply

Black Sabbath - "Heaven And Hell" (first one was "Live Evil")
Pink Floyd - "Animals" (first one was "The Wall")
Motorhead - "Bastards" (first one was "Rock'N'Roll")
Angra - "Holy Land" (first one was "Angels Cry")
Solitude Aeturnus - "Adagio" (first one was "Downfall")
Saxon - "Power & The Glory" (first one was "Crusader")
Blue Oyster Cult - "Secret Treaties" (first one was "Agents of Fortune")
Cathedral - "The Carnival Bizarre" (first one "The Ethereal Mirror")
Death Angel - "The Art Of Dying" (first one was "Act III")
Freedom Call - "Eternity" (first one was "Stairway To Fairyland")
Nazareth - "The Fool Circle" (first one was "Snaz")
Rainbow - "Rising" (first one was "Straight Between The Eyes")
Steel Prophet - "Messiah" (first one was "Dark Hallucinations")

But then again, is that because someone else told you to listen to this band - if you were going to introduce someone to Slayer would you tell them to but RIB or GHUA?

First...then favorite:

Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Black Sabbath
Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos, same album
Death - Spritual Healing, Individual Thought Patterns
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden, Powerslave
Judas Priest - British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance & Defenders Of The Faith
Iced Earth - Iced Earth, Burnt Offerings
Metallica - Kill 'Em All, same album
Obituary - Cause Of Death, Slowly We Rot
Overkill - The Years Of Decay, Under The Influence
Sepultura - Beneath The Remains, same album
Slayer - Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven
