lol... no really, its true

i'm waiting for anything worthwhile of convincing me otherwise. i'd welcome it. i suppose you have knowledge of the vast depth and breadth of the universe and all that it contains... seriously wtf?

edit: to clarify my stance on this, i'd say that just because you have absolutely no evidence whatsoever that something exists (i.e. that such is beyond your perception) does not in any way mean that you *know* anything conclusive about the issue whatsoever. you may believe that you're not going to acknowledge the existence of a higher power until you see some evidence, but i'd argue that to be a totally different claim than to say that its existence is impossible.

but not that old bearded guy who makes us kneel on uncomfortable floors, listen to old men talk and tells everybody what they can and cant do am i rite?

The existence of a god would be a miracle, which by definition is a disruption in the ordinary course of time/nature/whatever. There has never been a valid account of a miracle, ever, in the history of the world. There has never been anything to suggest that a miracle could actually occur. The likelihood of a miracle ever actually occurring is so minute as to be rendered essentially non-existent and essentially meaningless and it basically makes anybody who believes that miracles could occur a moron.

Do you believe that anything your mind could possibly conjure up (and everything that your mind cannot possibly conjure up) has a possibility of existing? If not, then why? What makes any random thing not generally thought to exist different from god? Semantically, by pure logic, of course one has to acknowledge the "possibility" of the existence of a higher power, but practically, realistically, and by far most likely, there is essentially no possibility of there being a god. So if you want to hold on to that little tiny grain of reasoning that you hold there in your hand for atheists being big fucking idiots because they don't believe that god could exist (depending on how you wish to interpret "possibility"), if that makes you feel superior, then go ahead.

Where is the option for "none of the above?"

I vote that or another one "Who the fuck really knows?"

Maybe it's my overly cynical and skeptical nature but I am baffled by how many people truly think they have the right answer (not in reference to this thread or board at all honestly).

I'm too tired to read past that first line but I will tomorrow. As for what I did read: like I said before, just because something is beyond your comprehension doesn't mean it is impossible. Think of all the things that once would have been considered a miracle, and how they are now commonplace. Do you truly believe we've reached such a zenith of our civilization that we can not consider the possibility that future revelations (if we do ever come to this possible knowledge) might similarly elucidate things which seem beyond even our present imaginations?

The answer, to me, is that as much as you may THINK you have all the answers, you don't, I don't, he doesn't, and skepticism + keeping an open mind makes much more sense than drawing conclusions where we are so obviously in over our heads.

if you're not willing to retain skepticism with respect to human knowledge/achievements you're rather useless... if only i could justify thinking of humans in such black and white terms

Why do we trust the conclusions of our own perception as fact? How do you scale something as abstract as perception against "logic" and "fact" ?

To further clarify - it's not that I don't find the topic interesting, it's that I don't find others' views on the topic interesting unless it's being discussed in a friendly, casual roundtable type atmosphere to pass the time.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm not likely to read some book written by a college professor debunking religion more than I am a priest promoting it.

Read the word of Christ, Muhammad, Buddha, LaVey, so forth, and decide if it's bullshit for yourself.

If you come to this conclusion, all the power to you. If you're still at a crossroads, just live your life, and see where your experiences take you.

If you think you're going to get a complete understanding of the texts just by reading the texts themselves, then you're slightly off-track.

Seriously What the Fuck?!?

Matt (NJ) What have you learned in your long 18 year existence that makes you oh so wise?

Edit - The texts are completely open to interpretation. Your OWN interpretation, and not that of a egg headed professor or a child groping priest.

I just said that you're not going to have a full understanding in all religious matters to make decisions simply by reading all the various religious texts.

Nothing in this life will lead us to full understanding. You've already contradicted your comment in post #42

What I am saying is, everyone needs to follow their own path of interpretive enlightenment.
