The illegal download/piracy/legal download/music business in 2011 thread

I edited it because I was being redundant. I'm not hiding anything, dude, I just omitted like half a sentence. But obviously there is no reasoning with you since you didn't even care about my long-winded post, and you certainly didn't care what anybody else said. My personal opinion is that you should posting here. From all that I've seen, you're just too irrational for people to stand.

I am done talking about this. I'm tired of dealing with petty/childish argumentative posts on a place that's always been nice and free of drama!

I'm too tired to reply to EVERYBODY here, and especially to your extremely long post which would probably take me half an hour to reply to. What I've noticed is that even the most petty thing that was done you act like somebody was murdered...and all of this is text. Nobody said anything in real life.

anyway as I told to Steve I'll take a short forum break to let things calm down a bit.... for about 3-5 days I guess, would be enough

See ya.

Just ignore SL, he is determined to troll. Do not feed trolls. The country he speaks of does not exist, they sell iTunes gift cards in Israel so if buying music online is impossible in his country then he is not in Israel.

Personally I would have to agree with what Steve said about "its better if you work for it". I have put 3 years of work into getting money rounded up so I can go on a trip through Europe and the feeling that I saved up the money for that all on my own is good enough already! Stealing music should be for rare occasions when it is pretty much necessary, meaning it is not available on iTunes, Rhapsody, etc. as well as in any local stores or online stores (prices over $30 US might as well mean it is not available as that is 6 hours of work after taxes!). Or if you already bought the album and you want the bonus track or you are too impatient for it to get to your house from a mail order.

I cannot agree more about the "How many songs do you have?" thing. It is retarded. I like high sound quality formats, meaning they take up much more space then the pirated music my friends fill their mp3 players with so even if you are comparing song numbers the higher the sound quality the lower amount of tracks you can have. I personally go by discographys. If you have a full collection of a few bands music (excluding live albums) then that is pretty impressive in my opinion. Usually I have more music on my 16GB Sony(recently deceased R.I.P.) then people have on their 80GB iPod because they need other things to do when listening to music, so they say. Music piracy is really getting out of hand though, something has to change.

You know, we were discussing this topic in my lecture today. The lecturer presented the quite terrifying concept that in 10-20 years, there may be a generation brought up entirely on "the latest thing" every day and having no concept of 'good' music (however one would define this).

What also worried me was sitting in a room with people generally in their 20s and when asked how many of us still listen to entire albums, 2 of us (the metal fans) put our hands up. Does that scare other people?

It scares me on two levels dude.....

1. As a musician an artist I try and make an album more than just a collection of songs.....particularly in recent times. It'll be interesting to see if this is picked up on when the album comes out

2. The general decrease in the attention span of the average person these days...who seem incapable of not only listening to an album but also reading a book. I was listening to something on the radio the other day where an author was saying that their publisher had actually asked for shorter chapters for this very reason.

Worrying in the extreme!

I can't relate to what Andy's experienced at all. Maybe it's the company I keep or because they're metalheads, I'm not sure but it's all about the albums for us. I couldn't listen to a new song from a band or find an unheard of song by a new band without wanting to listen to the whole album it's from so I can enjoy the context as well as the rest of the album; how it flows, the tone of it, the story etc.

Speaking of books, I've just recently gotten back into reading classic novels, after high school pretty much killed my enthusiasm for reading. Before high school, I was crazy about reading - after being forced to read, in my opinion, terrible books and literature that just wasn't challenging, I completely got bored with reading, and have found it hard to stay interested anymore! Thankfully my interest is returning, as I'm reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea now... starting to feel my love for books coming back!

However, I even see books being pirated online. Like, really? You can't spend literally 7 USD at a Barnes & Noble or Borders for a 500 page classic book? That's half the cost of a CD, and people still want things for free... it's really kind of sad!

Pirating BOOKS?
I couldn't do that. Even if it became completely legal and good (hypothetically speaking, of course!), I'd much rather pay - you just can't beat an actual book in front of you.
I'm not one for 'classics', but I do enjoy reading.

Pirating books...when these things called libraries exist? Lazy buggers. Dude I'm a member of a bibliophile book-sharing community called Bookcrossing.com, look it up if you like it sounds like it might appeal. I've had a lot of books sent to me for free and presents and stuff sent, it's a REALLY friendly community.

Awesome, I'll look into that!

I do enjoy this new wave of ereaders though. I got a Kobo for Christmas, completely unexpected... now, I wouldn't go out and buy one myself, since they're so pricey, but damn it isn't convenient to have 100 built-in classics in something that weighs as much as a deck of cards! Absolutely amazing.

Wait they pirate BOOKS? *insert vulgar rant here* I'm only 18 and I have over 60 books, that I payed for myself, all costing between 8-30 USD. I consider myself of average intelligence, even though everyone else claims I am smart I do not think of myself as smart but instead just gifted with a normal length attention span instead of the shortened ones everyone else has coupled with an almost photographic memory. Books should not be pirated, hell they shouldn't even be online to begin with! Maybe I'm just weird but the feel of the paper in my hands, the look of the cover art, the neatly placed reviews, awards, and descriptions, you can't replace that with some boring, bland, 12 pt. Times New Roman font "book". How are you going to know when the page ends? Just read an endless block of text? Blasphemy I tell you. Blasphemy!

Another questiong for you Steve:) is it the artist/band or the record label who deside if the album is to be put on Spotify?

I know the thread deviated slightly to a who's-the-biggest-bibliophile thing but just to say I got a Kindle for Christmas as a surprise gift and I have to say as cool as it is I do prefer the feeling of an actual book in my hands. In a way it does have parallel to the music piracy issue because whilst there is the pleasure of having a physical object to admire the art of and to display and the feel of it in your hands, when it comes to convenience and cost it can make sense to have a digital copy. So long as the money gets back to the creator of the product you can have it in any form you want I guess.

Which brings me to a question I have for Steve - which way of buying it benefits you and the lads most? Does it matter where I buy from?

Best for us is still the conventional CD, no matter where it is purchased. Of course we don't see anything until all costs are recouped by the label. Then there is the recouping of the extra investment we make in the album on top of the advance from the label. Unfortunately due to the piracy/theft/illegal downloading our advances are not what they were 5 years ago so if we want to continue to make the best product we can (which of course we do) then I have to put my money where my mouth is! LOL!

And i'm glad you do:D

Can you really see a big diffrence sense 5 years ago? damn, didn't think piracy had grown that much in just a few years...

hopefully this album will be a turning point then:) and from the clips i've heard...it will!

Oh yeah, after being in the game for 10 years or so now.......and observing things from outside the band environment for many years before that.....it's a very different world out there now.

But yeah....hopefully Blood Alliance will be the one to make the difference!

My original post seemed to have been lost amid the recent flame war with Symphonic Life. For now I have a question for all those opposed to illegal downloading. How do you feel about selling music second-hand, bearing in mind that money made from the sale of 2nd-hand CDs, vinyl etc. tends not to go to artists or recording companies?

I wonder this too! Especially since a lot of the CDs I do buy are usually bought used just to save myself a ton of money, mainly when it comes to CDs that are 10+ years old by now.
