The purpose of this thread is to recognize the various epic/classic/5-star threads that we've witnessed here in GMD, and to prevent these threads from fading into obscurity. I guess it's a variation of the Forum Awards, but one we can keep playing with year-round.

NOTE: this thread may turn into a clusterfuck, so if I miss one of your nominations just remind me, or delete some of your older posts to reduce the clutter.

----------------------------------------------------------------

RULES - TLDR VERSION

Post links to the threads you think should be on the list, and if other people agree with you they'll be added. Don't nominate too many threads at once. If your nomination doesn't make the list and you're wondering why, try reading the actual rules below.

RULES - FULL VERSION

#1: Applicable threads
Only threads in GMD or one of its subforums (i.e. Social) may be nominated. PLEASE post a link to the threads you nominate. No threads that are listed in http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/general-metal-discussion/552206-gmd-genre-band-directory.html may be nominated.

#2: Megathreads
Threads with 2500 posts or more (i.e. 100 pages long in normal view) will be kept in a separate "Megathreads" list in order to keep the actual Thread of the Month list more interesting. Megathreads do not require standard nominations; they will simply be added to the separate list as they are mentioned.

#3: Number of nominations required
A thread must be 'seconded' and 'thirded' (for a total of 3 nominations) before it can be added to the list. It is recommended that you "dot"-quote someone's post if you wish to second or third their nomination. Threads which have only 1 or 2 nominations will be listed in the "outstanding nominations" post (a.k.a. the second post) until they either get 3 nominations or their nominations are retracted.

#4: Tracking of nominations
Another section in the second post entitled "accepted nominations" will display each thread in the Thread of the Month list along with who nominated it. This way, we can distinguish the threads of the month from their corresponding honorable mentions, and retract threads from the list if needed.

#5: Nominations per person
Each forum member may have up to 5 total outstanding nominations (this includes 'seconds' and 'thirds' for threads that someone else nominated). Note that if a thread you nominate is added to the Thread of the Month list, that nomination is no longer "outstanding", so you are free to nominate another thread.

#6: Retraction of nominations
Forum members may retract any of their nominations at any time (i.e. in order to nominate another thread, or to get a thread removed from the Thread of the Month list). If the number of nominations for a thread drops below 3, it will be removed from the Thread of the Month list.

#7: No self-nominations
No forum member may nominate a thread he/she created him/herself (even if it is first nominated by someone else).

#8: Thread of the Month
For each month, the thread with the most nominations for that month will be given the title of Thread of the Month. In the event that there are multiple threads tied with the most nominations, the title will be given to the thread that first received its final nomination.

#9: Honorable Mentions
Any thread with at least three nominations that does not win the title of Thread of the Month will be listed as an Honorable Mention below the winning thread.

#10: Changes to the rules
Any of the above rules are subject to change as we come up with improvements for them.

I don't know if the mega threads (such as the news thread, the social thread, black metal, etc...) should be included. Their popularity is evident, and merely serve as a way to cut down on the clutter of the board.

I think it should look more at unique and individual threads that stand on their own such as the accents/voice thread and hating krampus thread

I'm open to that, I was just reluctant to introduce the "super-popular thread" distinction initially. The question is, how do we define "super-popular thread"? 100+ pages?

There are a few mega threads that have died out, and I feel they deserve some sort of recognition, but now that I think about it we do have that old-ass archive thread I created years ago, and we could just list the dead megathreads there.

I second the Accents/voice thread.

The Controversial Opinions thread for so many classic moments in GMD history. Special mention - "Interchangeability of thought occurs through the experience of listening thus formulating a change of discern."

I shall reserve my final nomination for a while.

Nice initiative, Grant!

I'm gonna have a slightly expanded set of rules ready in a few minutes. In the mean time:

1) I second ML's nom

2) we have several controversial opinions threads Ananth, so please post a link to the one you're referring to
