The Initial Impressions Thread

Warning - The Strength to Dream

Obviously nothing on Watching From a Distance but this is pretty damn good doom. The biggest area where they need improvement here would be the vocals, but the riffs are also notably less sorrowful.

The full length is much more cohesive and focused than the EP.

While this is true, the ep has a bit more...I dunno exactly how to put it but, it has a bit more plain old rockin' ass kickin' riffs. The slightly rawer sound and the slightly more aggressive riffs make me put it on just as much as the full length.

Yeah, the EP is much more straightforward sounding, and I listen to it more than the album, but the album is pretty good if a little overrated. Obviously more for the Immolation crowd, which I'm not usually part of.

Pavillon Rouge - Mizuage

Checked them out a while back after getting an ad for the EP with some stuff I ordered from Necrocosm. I went to their myspace and the first track I listened to was "La Porte De Jade". Within the first few seconds of the track I was hooked.
Great industrial extreme metal with some clean vocal parts.
There are 4 tracks with the last one being a cover of Blacklodge's TAOS.
In all if you like industrial black metal they're worth checking out.

This is not the first time I've heard this album, but I still don't know whether to like or dislike this album.

The vocalist is the current vocalist in Sybreed, also.

Inspell - Arcadian Tales: The Egregore
This is pretty fucking mediocre. The sad part is that there are a number of kickass thrash riffs on here; unfortunately, these guys are trying to play symphonic black metal. Dogshit guitar tone, weak keyboards, and poor (though tolerable) vocals don't really help.

Wolf Spider - Drifting in the Sullen Sea

Poland 1991

This is an odd release. It is a combination of killer thrash/speed riffs and eclectic weirdness. The singer has an unappealing voice that could unprecisely be called a mix of Kevin Dubrow (Quiet Riot) and Klaus Mein (Scorpions), or some other thing. It's not horrible, but it is not appealing. Within a given song, and across the album, there is a lack of consistent thrash, and even metal. They mix in some ethnic stuff, some rock and roll, some silliness, some party metal, etc. I think if it were more consistently thrash, I would like it quite a bit, even with the vocals. As it stands, I am not sure I will keep it.

Vektor - Black Future

Release from this year, My friend heard about them from myspace and just told me he got the album tonight. He likes a lot old school metal bands so I trust his opinion and I gotta say it's one of the most refreshing things I've heard this year. They are like a combination of Thrash/Progressive Death.

The solos are all fast and fucking a blast to listen to.

If you like Death, Sadus, King Diamond...check them out.

Trist - Sebevrazedni Andele
This is basically just 40+ minutes of depressing noise. Works pretty well, but the vocals really add nothing and the three minutes of random screaming at the end of the first track really both me because otherwise this would be a perfect album to just throw on when I want to get to sleep.

My initial Impression of the new Infinitum Obscure album is that it fucking rocks. In fact, I was worried i liked it too much the first listening to it, because I find the albums that do not have to grow on me at all are normally the ones I forget about the fastest.
