The Initial Impressions Thread

Magellan - Symphony for a Misanthrope

This is very Genesis/Yes-esque prog rock in the neo-prog rock tradition, and obviously by Trent Gardner since he has such a Collins-esque voice that it's hard not to notice that it just sounds like Genesis turned their amps up and got way keyboardy. It actually was goddamn good. I even liked the super pretentious long song that every prog album for some reason just is required to have, in this case, Cranium Reef Suite. I had my doubts about this (mainly because Explorers Club, Trent's other project, is FUCKING BAD) but this was pretty damn good, I must say.

So, I tried REALLY hard to listen to The Faceless-'Planetary Duality'....fucking awful. Just terrible. Useless, utterly boring wankery, and the clean vocals that popped out of nowhere pissed me off so badly that I stopped. I couldn't do it. It wasn't due to me being biased, I just flat out couldn't stand them. Ugh. What a waste of time.
I feel the same way about Necrophagist.

Magellan - Symphony for a Misanthrope
Sounds like something i'd be interested in.

Strapping Young Lad - City
I only got through two songs. This is just awful...fucking awful lyrics, too.

Excoriate - On Pestilent Winds...

I like this, bit more death/thrash than death metal it seems, but tbh I'm finding that I don't have a desire to come back to death metal that's not in the vein of Incantation/Immolation so who knows if I'll come back to this.

Gorelord - NCM

Not what I expected but its cool none the less. Seemed more core than I initialy thought it would be.

Necrovation - Breed Deadness Blood

Ok I could see coming back to this one multiple times for sure.

Coram Lethe - The Gates of Oblivion

2005

After almost one full spin, I am pretty impressed with this. I would describe it as progressive death metal. There are odd time signatures and time changes and killer passages/moments pretty consistently worked into musical songs. The vocals are fine, and vary to some degree.

Recommended to fans of stuff like Gory Blister, Sceptic, Gorod and the like.

Black Lotus - Harvest of Seasons

I checked this band out because Einherjar mentions them a lot, and he and I have similar taste. I was expecting folky black metal with a good balance of epicness and emotional impact, and it delivers. However, the guitar and bass tones are far too muddy and allow the vocals and keyboard to dominate the mix.

Just when I thought you had one of the best tastes on the boards

Really? Belligerent has some of the worst taste on this board, to be honest. I mean, obviously looking at his sig he gets a few things right, but if I had to nominate someone for overall worst taste, he would make the short list.

I was un-aware we were being judged on tastes and being put into lists n' such.
