The Initial Impressions Thread

Boring with some AMAZING drumming.

I'll both the shit out of you.

You can see how bothered I was.

Not metal, but...
Rites of Spring - End On End
This was really fucking good. Extremely emotional and the chaotic music was a perfect match for the vocals.

Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
I expected this to rule, given how much praise it gets from people I respect. But it's kinda boring the shit out of me, to be honest.

WAIF: Give it time, as I had the exact same initial reaction. That was my first Primordial album as well, and it took about 20 plays to hit me.

Patient man. I think that, short of that kind of patience with music, I prefer the days when I could only afford 1 new release every two weeks or a month. Then you are forced to get all that you can out of each release... at least to a larger degree.

And it's not that I am impatient, it's that the amount of time I can dedicate to listening to metal is pretty limited.

I do plan on giving it multiple spins, since I often change my mind on things.

Just listened to:
White Wizzard - High Speed GTO
I was somewhat disappointed, since I bought this based on the song High Speed GTO, which is by far the best on here. Still a pretty good little EP. These guys have the potential to be awesome, but they need to work on the songwriting a bit; in particular I felt like there were many parts where the vocals had fairly little relation to the music.

Saint Vitus - Mournful Cries

Decent. This is the second album of theirs I've heard. V being the first. I must say V absolutely blows this record out of the water. 'Dragon Time' is a pretty good song, but everything else on the album just pales in comparison to everything on V.

Reign of Erebus - Inversion Principle
This seemed promising - the cover art and song titles, while unoriginal, promised well-crafted Satanic black metal. Unfortunately, it was just a fucking wall of noise. The music sounded like it might be alright, but I couldn't hear anything over the fucking snare.

So I just listened to Into The Pandemonium for the very first time this weekend. I love Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion so much I didn't know what to expect with this and I had heard it was very different. It has been on my "To Buy" list for years and I finally picked it up for $10 at a local shop. Initially I wasn't sure what to think. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. After a couple of listens I do enjoy it. Quite a bit in fact. I do question the choice of Mexican Radio being the opening track, though if they did it to shock the listener right off the bat, then I suppose it was a wise choice.

Good album. Bought it for $1...original pressing gatefold vinyl in great condition. Love it when that happens.
Anyhow, very weird album...but I like it. His clean vocals are so off-putting but ultimately endearing...

Not really metal, but...
Tantrum - All Hope Is Lost
I guess this is hardcore, or maybe metalcore. Dunno. Very aggressive, but too many breakdowns, not enough speed. Some great melodies and no gothenburgy stuff. They have potential. Pretty good as far as free shit from CMD goes.

Shadows Fall - Of One Blood
I'd already had it, but I got the remaster from CMD as a gift. The album itself is pretty good if you don't mind Brian Fair's vocals. Not great, but consistent and aggressive. The remastering is shit, though. Everything sounds really dry and there's not enough bottom end.

Tourniquet - Pathogenic Occular Dissonance
Pretty cool. I don't mind the overt Christian themes. Not quite enough of an emphasis on ripping thrash, but overall very good. Will be getting more spins f'sho.

So, I tried REALLY hard to listen to The Faceless-'Planetary Duality'....fucking awful. Just terrible. Useless, utterly boring wankery, and the clean vocals that popped out of nowhere pissed me off so badly that I stopped. I couldn't do it. It wasn't due to me being biased, I just flat out couldn't stand them. Ugh. What a waste of time.

My friend was obsessed with Cradle of Filth in high school and I always thought it was utter shit. Nothing but noise. Over time I learned to love them, and now they're one of my favorite metal bands.
