Since most music lovers enjoy expanding their playlists, I thought a music recommendation thread was in order.

If the members of ND dont want this thread here just delete it.

So I guess I'll start off.

A band that I found quite recently is Ikuinen Kaamos, maby you have heard of them. They are a progressive death/black metal band from Finland and their debut album "The Forlorn" is already one of my favorite metal albums. Their second album "Epilogue" is delayed! :waah: But I cant fucking wait for it!

To me it sounds like early Opeth meets early Ulver.

The cd does not have the best production but youtube makes it way worse then it is on the record. The only place I found their record were on their own homepage www.ikuinenkaamos.net . It's well worth the 15 euros. I think you can download two of their songs for free if you have a lastfm account.

Some of my best discoveries of this year have been as follows:

DOOMSWORD

Doom / Epic trad metal band from Italy. Really can't compare them to anyone. Maybe if Candlemass were more trad than doom, maybe?

PAGAN ALTAR

Amazing cult doom band from the UK. Became active again a couple years ago.

SOLSTICE

Yeah, I am a little late for the game on these guys, I know. Also, from the UK.

I can come up with tons more, though I will try to keep it to bands that I think would possibly appeal to NOV DOOM fans. (IE - the new POWER QUEST and DRAGONFORCE discs are great, though I am not sure how many folks here would be interested)

15 Euro is $22 US, and then include shipping, it gets pricy to say the least.

Also, anyone recommends a band, post an example like the OP with a youtube video or link to the myspace page, to make it easier on anyone wanting to check them out. This thread was a good idea, so let's try to keep this one on topic, and a good resource for new music.

AJATTARA

If you haven't heard them, you should. I've mentioned them several times on here, and we've played with them in Europe, as they joined us on the DVD recording show. Finnish band, with Pasi (Ex-Amorphis) on vocals.

AJATTARA - ...Putoa

AJATTARA - Haureus

AJATTARA - Hurmasta

I think the price includes shipping but 22 dollars is still alot.

Another group I've recently started to like is Cult of Luna, they are pretty big in Sweden but I dont know if they are known abroad. Their latest record "Eternal Kingdom" is realy good. They play som sort of doom/post-metal.

Finland is probably the best song on their myspace.

They sound abit like Novembers Doom but in finnish :)

Another good Finnish band is Tenhi. They remind me of Agallochs folky stuff.

MARTRIDEN

A newer US band, and they even have a forum here on UM. This is the song that made me a fan. I personally love the EP they released, and the full length has the same great production and song writing, but for me, leaving behind the death metal style vocal on the full length and just using the black metal style disappointed me, only because I'm really picky with growlers, and I thought this guy was fantastic on the EP. Anyway, bad ass stuff here!

DAVID SYLVIAN

Something non metal for you. A friend recently turned me on to David Sylvian, and I'm really digging his music. David used to be the front man in the old band Japan. He's got a strong David Bowie vibe to his voice, and the music is really ambient, simplistic, dark and depressing. I would say if you're a fan of Katatonia and Anathema, this might be a good alternative to the heavier side of things, while keeping the emotional vibe.

I have a couple. First off Portrait from Sweden:

And no thats not KIng Diamond. According to the myspace they are looking for a new singer. That sucks!.

My other is Blue Murder. I'm surprised at the number of people that have never heard of them. John Sykes on guitar, Tony Franklin on bass and the Carmin Appice on drums. The self titled simply rocks. An old friend actually took Drum lessons from Carmin before a show in the Quad Cities back in 89. You guys are gonna love the mullet.

Byzantine is a great thrash/groove metal band. Unfortunately, they broke up shortly after the release of their album, Oblivion Beckons, earlier this year.

Mar de Grises is an excellent death/doom metal band from Chile. Their sound is along the lines of Swallow the Sun with a little more of a post metal influence. The album deserves to be listened to in its entirety, but give these tracks a try from the new album, Draining the Waterheart.

Finally, here is some instrumental doom from France of all places. If you can invest the necessary time in each of the tracks, the payoff is usually worth it.

I haven't found a new band since I would guess Agalloch. That's been a while. I should really start digging into music again. I've been stuck on Sigur Ros and The Gathering for the last year or so.

btw, If you are a Gathering fan you probably already know this but Anneke's new project is called Agua de Annique. Go to the website and you can listen to 4 songs. Didn't buy the album yet but I'm going to soon. If you liked "Home" you'll probably like this.

You beat me to it! Good choice. Anneke's new band has quickly become one of my favorites, and my top pick for CD of 2008. I love it. I had the chance to see Agua De Annique in The Netherlands last November, in a very intimate club with and it was a concert highlight for me. Just amazing.

AGUA DE ANNIQUE

HAIL OF BULLETS

Old school death metal the way it SHOULD be played, with the legendary Martin Van Drunen on the mic. If you thought Pestilence and Asphyx we're godly like I did, you need to check this out if you haven't already. Most likely my top pick of 2008, as I can't see myself getting into a CD more then this one. This to me is the best death metal release in YEARS.

HAIL OF BULLETS - Stalingrad

HAIL OF BULLETS - Red Wolves of Stalin
