The new Opeth sounds fucking amazing

I've listened to this album maybe ten times now. I don't know if it's just because I heard it first, and I've heard it so many times, but "Sorceress" is still the most memorable song on the entire album, and it's not really much like anything else on it. "Chrysalis" is probably the second best, followed by "The Wilde Flowers", "Era" and I guess "Strange Brew". The album is rather diverse, but it just comes off more like a weak "best of" remix of past ideas to me. Easily better than the last two, but still not something I'll ever want to actively listen to on its own, and I'll probably only listen to it when I go on a binge where I listen to all of their albums in order of release.

Sucks that this is the new direction they took, but whatever. It's not like they haven't released enough good material already for a lifetime.

I haven't heard the album, but every song they've released after Sorceress seems a bit weak. I anticipated the album would be what you've described.
