I got to thinking there should be a thread where people suggest bands that aren't metal, that they think people would like, and aren't very well known. We'll see if it catches on...

My reccommendation is a group called 8mm. They're kinda trip-hop/pop/rock-y. The guy who mixed 2 marylin manson records and works with NIN is the guitarist and songwriter. I think the highlight is the vocalist, her vocals are really tight and clean. Her voice is smooth and great to listen to in my opinion and i hate female vocals.

Check there stuff out, i really like "you know" .

mm my recommendation are from newer stuff :
Android Lust - Devour, Rise and Take Flight /female fronted experimental electro/industrial/idm produced.
Atrium Carceri - Ptahil / dark ambient,
Lustmord - Juggernaut /with king buzzo from melvins,
Skinny Puppy - Mythmaker / my fav band :D,
Dredg - Live at the Fillmore

8mm is nice :P

I like a lot of indie stuff:

+/- (or plus/minus)
Shiner (broken up)
The National
Rival Schools (broken up)
The Church (Australian band, been around for over 25 years)
This Beautiful Mess

and slightly heavier rock stuff:
The Damage Manual (feat. Geordie from Killing Joke,Jah Wobble Martin Atkins & John Connelly from Revolting Cocks/Ministry)

Android Lust
Skinny Puppy

I love Android Lust and Skinny Puppy. How's Mythmaker, anyway? Closer to Ogre's solo stuff or leaning more towards the darker, usual Skinny Puppy sound?

On the mellower side of industrial, Collide is awesome. Karin, their vocalist, has the sexiest voice in the universe, too, which is a big plus as far as I'm concerned.

I just got Tom Waits' "Real Gone" yesterday. It kicks ass. My girlfriend hates it; she says it sounds like Waits guesting on an Einsturzende Neubauten album. :D Lots of banging and clattering, loops, distortion on everything, and the growliest voice this side of death metal.

If we're talking experimental stuff, I always have to promote King Crimson's "The Power To Believe" as one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Badass album through and through.

Man, my obscure bands nobody has ever heard of are all metal bands that everybody here will already know.

Umm. I'll say Coheed and Cambria. I love those guys, you just have to get used to their singer's voice. After that it's all gravy. Tasty warm delicious gravy.

Yep. Loved Shiner, never got what was coming to them. Paul Malinowski is a monster bass player and a great producer. I got an email from one of the guys a few years ago when I was living in Australia, and was declared their "farthest fan" so they sent me some shirts for free. Gotta love 'em. Starless or The Egg gets a spin at least once a week in this house.
