The official and most atmospheric Children of Joonas thread

Sorry, that's not my description of atmospheric. You can hear Japanese melodies, can't see why you interpreted my transcriptions that way?

0:30 - this sounds damn amazing without keyboards (and half of guitars here).

These days they have the keyboard sound much better, and recently played the intro an octave lower (at least on one live recording I heard) which sounds great. But this section needs a saw'ish key sound with echo.

Have something like this as the next album artwork, title the album Witch Moon. With just a black silhouette of the Reaper's gown and scythe on the other side. On the other side shape of a tree. And a faint reflection of blood red on waves of water. Would be sick and capture the essence of this music.

The only witch theme on the last album was Morrigan, really.

What I'm looking for with the title is the myth about moon sometimes making people anxious and even violent. The term is 'moonstruck' / (lunatic).

'Crazy or insane when affected by the phases of the Moon.'
'Showing irrational behaviour, especially of a romantic or sentimental nature.'

Temporary mental illness. Sounds very much like possible explanation for the Bodom murders. In myth or reality.

Just not sure if Moonstruck is an interesting title. I'd just call it Witch Moon. It's not my band, but as a passionate fan this is one idea I come up with. There's all kinds of moons, wolf moon, black moon, blue moon... the eclipse was used on the last album, which suggests a witchcraft link. But I always thought Bodom artwork is screaming for a pale full moon. But this one could be creepy. Depends on the nature of the music of course.

So, will you use two guitars or one? What about any keyboards? I have an idea in mind.

Firstly, it will include:

- a fast riff (tremolo)
- a medium speed riff (death metal)
- a slow riff (doom)
- a fast beat (black metalish blastbeat)
- a medium beat
- a slow beat

So very simple, three different speeds, then we'll fool around with them...

I will tell you more tomorrow once you tell about 1 or 2 guitars, and keys or no keys. :D

I might be doing this too (Again) and will use keyboards and at least two guitars (Probably have two rhythms, one on each side, one lead in the center and possibly some harmonies with one panned a bit to the left and the other a bit to the right). Don't limit yourself to my default template though. Whatever you come up with I will try to do and I don't have a problem with putting more tracks in than I usually do if required.

You can both try if you want. :D

I have this idea of using 3 different tempo riffs and 3 different tempo beats, changing what goes with what / when. Sounds should be dark and echoing.

As opposed to guitars, keyboards are closely tied in with a chosen sound. So I'm only thinking about a few orchestral hits.

I asked about guitars, because I had in mind using the slow riff and the fast riff together at some point.

Nothing too complicated technical-wise, it would just be exciting to try mood swings in a song. One guitar, drums, bass, and orchestral hits would do.

Of course when you read a description of a song, you will hear your version of it in your head, so notes are up to you.

Whatever, here's something for you to try. It's not radical in terms of sections, but can you create three different tempo beats and three different tempo riffs that each sound fitting together? This song is radical only in that aspect!

Intro:
Slow drums + slow bass
Fast riff + fast drums

Verse 1:

Medium riff + medium drums
-Two orchestral hits-
Medium riff + medium drums

Verse 2:

Medium riff (an octave lower) + medium drums
-Two orchestral hits-
Medium riff (an octave lower) + medium drums

Interlude:

Fast riff + fast drums

Pre-chorus:

Slow riff + medium drums

Chorus:

Slow riff + fast drums + keyboard choir of your taste

-Two orchestral hits-

Verse 3:

Medium riff + medium drums
-Two orchestral hits-
Medium riff + fast drums

Breather section:

Slow riff + slow drums (same as intro) + keyboard choir

Chorus:

Slow riff + fast drums + keyboard choir

Outro:

Fast riff + fast drums (same as interlude)

I'd imagine this lasts about 3:00 - 3:20 or something. No solos. I'm not describing the mood of every section, leaving room for your creativity, just hoping you come up with something that sounds dark and sinister, no Iron Maiden stuff. :D If you can pull it off then we can try to make some cult shit with radical song construction.

Fixed a couple of things about the sections I figured today at work. Now it's good, won't touch it again, so copy paste that for yourself.

Whenever I praised Varg Vikernes, I now disagree. His stupid and negative views on veganism, beta males and Christianity turned me off. It was saddening and disappointing to see this, as he seemed to have been elevated from a dark place to a state of light and freedom. It's nice he likes history and living on the farm, but otherwise he's an anguished soul. Just hope he truly finds the light one day and is rid of his strange black and white thinking. He should let his soul free and focus that negativeness into music, but instead he's wondering the land focusing on things he can't influence and has abandoned black metal.

There was a video of Alexander playing and singing Hate Me on a small live concert in a forest with old drunk people. Some kind of humppa party maybe. It was taken down and deleted. It was uploaded last summer, but had only about 130 views. I'm 90% sure it was Alexander.

After the long talk about how exciting The Nail would be live, here it is, since last being played 19 years ago. I have to highlight the section after the intro, and the beautiful unison melody starting 3:10 that reaches an eargasmic elevation in pitch. The atmospheric tremolo, anxiously beating pedal and screams buried under rumbling doublebass is amazing. The band seems to embrace this song's energy while nailing the notes in ever-flowing groove through the near six minutes. It's one of the under-appreciated songs that deserve a chance.

Alexi has the main rights to Sinergy, correct? I'd like to have many of the songs without those vocals. There's some of Alexi's best songwriting there, it's a shame it's so 'hidden.'

I tell you what would be a major breakthru. Put those songs without vocals but add in electronic stuff. Some shit I'd like to blast in a car.

I fucking love the verse riff in Beware the Heavens, and that gloomy section in Suicide By My Side after the solos. And many other epic riffs and beats. Can you imagine if that kind of stuff was mixed with some slight electronic elements.

It was big mistake to give such emphasis for Kimberly in that project. Even in terms of mixing, way too loud.

3:30 - 5:00 now this sounds beautiful. This with guitar and keyboard doing harmony... It's like you've heard this so many times and know these 'tricks' in songs, but they put it all together.

I think the single before was good. Album not, tho. It's a shame cos they have some mesmerizing songs, but it seems their songwriting has become a business pattern, not from the heart anymore. Well, it happens to everyone. It just becomes very one-dimentional, when there used to be like three things going on simulataneously in the songs all serving one purpose. You used to see this epicness unfold before you, but now you just see the songwriter having a guitar session trying to figure out excuses of songs.

Now that you mention it. I think I have the same relation with CoF as you have (had?) with CoB. I've always been in love with the atmosphere their music had. It was really taking me to completely different worlds with different histories and I loved it. If you feel the same way about current CoB as I do with current CoF, then I feel really sorry for you, for it's such a pain in the heart to lose such greatness and to fall into the "norm"
