The official FIFA World Cup Deutschland 2006 Thread

this World Cup sucked so hard. I don't know why some teams made it to the final rounds after playing such a horrible first round. I hope Southafrica 2010 will be better. May the best team win over there...

I absolutely dont get your point. You mean when a team sucks in the first round and then manages to play very well, it still doesnt deserve to play in finals? Look at Czechs, they wiped out the USA, but then played like idiots in remaining 2 matches. Its the World Cup, for fucks sake, you also need heaps of good luck to get to the finals, you dont always have to be the best all the way from the start.

I am glad France won, Portugal played it again for penalties, pointless theatre football (they didnt miss a single chance to dive, the ref was fantastic). Carvalhos tackle was dubious, but I think France deserved to win. Thanks for the link, Mal! :)

What a fag! He always cries when they lose..
(he also cried like a baby when we beat his ass in Euro '04)

^Wasn't that picture taken after his dad died?

It surely wasnt taken today. I dont quite get all the fuss about him. I mean, even if he asked for the red card, it wasnt him who kicked the poor guy in the crotch. Also, refs usually dont grant anyone's wishes for cards, so there's only Rooney to blame.
I dont even see why he makes such a good target for mockery.. he's arrogant, ok but he's like 20? 21? And already a star, so who blames him?

If you have to hate players, hate de Rossi or Totti or whoever, players who are real assholes and have a long reputation of being unfair players and reckless divers.

@tali: ah, revanchisme... you know, hating our team won't bring yours back. :p

No, it wasnt.

Tal, you are right, it was mainly Rooneys fault, so the booing at Ronaldo was kinda stupid. Ronaldo is a very good player, but I still cant help not liking him for his unfairness and arrogance.

It doesnt have anything to do with the last match, it's something Ive always disliked about the italian team, or the argentinians. Many have protested against de Rossi's nomination and as we saw, with good reason. As it happens, Totti committed a very rude foul against another german player, Ramelow, he jumped on him with both feet while Ramelow was laying on his back. Fouls with such brutality dont just "happen", they are a sign of a very sick mentality.
Im not saying I hate the italian team, it was a good match and you deserved to win in the end, but I do hate players who commit brutal fouls on purpose. Or another name that comes to mind is Inzaghi. He took diving to a level where it became almost some kind of sick artform. That's just not normal, and for a team with talents like Italy, it should be sort of a taboo, not some sort of second nature

What was disgusting about this German pizza?

i'm about as easy-going and anti-nationalist as they come, and yet i have to admit i rarely ate good pizza outside of my country. i don't think it's a matter of forgetting how to do it: european countries with different traditions concerning food (and the usa, which have absolutely no tradition about food whatsoever) like their pizza in a certain way, and that's a fact. italian immigrants will make a pizza that's appealing to the citizens of the country they've moved to, regardless of any notion about "how it's done". besides, most "italian" restaurants around the world do not have an italian chef, in much the same way other supposed ethnic places aren't run by members of the corresponding ethnic group.

this was an extremely long-winded way to say that to us german pizza was horrible, but perhaps for the germans it was the food of the gods. for instance, i've always been shocked by the idea that you might want to put pineapple on a pizza. i mean, next time i want to get some food just beat me with a spiked club and take out my nipples, it's faster and less painful.

I really would like to know what youd say about the pizza here in my hometown. The place is run by an Italian, and although he doesnt make them himself, its his recipe. I think youd like it, because his Italian friends come to eat there from time to time, and like his pizza. Its very thin, a bit crusty on the outer side. And he hates when Slovak people put ketchup on it. :D I like it very much, although some people here say its disgusting (which proves that Im right :p ).

@rahvin: i'd hardly call a preference for indigenous pizza nationalism

i concur wholeheartedly with the pineapple/ketchup argument, and i will add that in general people from Northern europe either undercook or overcook their pizza, no sense of timing.

Now I learned to play football in Spanish. Now I know things like fuera de juego (offside), saque de puerta (¿o saque de meta?) (goal-kick) and so on :D

Both "saque de meta" and "saque de puerta" mean the same :) .

Zack
Whats with Bloodred and the refs? This guy was good! He let the game go on and gave plenty of warnings, only issuing a few yellow cards.

Hehe I guess I just don't like how they've been doing on this WC, they were pretty bad IMO.

So, I didn't get the idea of the German pizza? Was ist das? Pizza mit Schnizel "or something"? (How would ye say the last part?)

There are a lot of italian restaurants here in CR. 'Tis funny because around the UCR's (University of CR) main campus you'll find like, what, 12 pizza restaurants, but only 2 are owned by italians. The rest are owned by argentinians :p .

i know i have liked the occasional foreign pizza, time and again, so it's not impossible that i would find it tolerable, good, or even very good. even if it's not what i'm accustomed to, i'm open to new tastes. just not many of them, or those involving sweet fruit on salty meals.

for instance, i love these guys' pizza. unfortunately, since they don't do home delivery (heh), i'm pretty much stuck without eating it until i visit the east coast again. if anyone who lives in the area wants to overnight me - i don't know - a hundred mediums with jalapenos and onions, i'd be eternally grateful.

edit: yeah, i'm derailing this thread like a muslim on a crowded train. but it's the world cup. you can't expect people to take it seriously.

:p yeah sometimes some pizzas have curious food on them. Someone told me he even saw a pizza with fries on it once...

For american food, i agree...I went to an italian restaurant over there once, and no way to find spaghetti with a good sauce. American lasagna is funny too.

ketchup on a pizza?? ewww disgusting...
