THE PALE HAUNT DEPARTURE - FAN reviews

I got this cd last week, and I've been playing it tons. It's amazing. The only other CD I have by you guys is the rerelease of To Welcome the Fade, and it's pretty good, but this is definitely an improvement. I'm not a very good reviewer, so I'll just say- thanks for the amazing music

Thanks for the kind words, and thats a great picture of S.C.A.T., thats one of my favorite games for Nintendo. :headbang:

hey guys, just dropped by, figured i'd throw my 2 cents in. I enjoyed the new record, actully it's pretty awesome. great production to say the least. Awesome guitar tone, excellent harmonies, good song structure, pauls vocals are extra brutal too. i liked most of the clean vocals, even though i though that they were a little over the top here and there, but over all a great effort! everything was solid right down to the amazing artwork/layout. kudos guys. \m/

And I'd like to say a big thanks to you guys for making the video of the title track available for download on the site. The sound and atmosphere are downright amazing plus the quality of the highest file size (288 MB) is simply fantastic. I still can't believe you let us have it for free. Cheers. :kickass:

I can't seem to get Pale Haunt Departure out of my car's CD player. I can't really write a review, I just know that I love it.
Very moving and deep. Just...awesome!
Thank you. ;)

Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure

I read about Novembers Doom some time ago in a review or an interview but it didn't quite attract me as the definitions were more or less towards "doom metal" and at the time I really hated doom metal (especially what they call "true doom metal" or funeral doom, I still hate those) so I didn't even bother to give it much listening (stupid me). Well a while ago I was downloading some albums randomly and among those albums "The Pale Haunt Departure" by Novembers Doom. (I'm very sorry if someone gets offended by this but I always download the songs first, THEN I decide if I will buy the album or not. That's just how it is with me. I don't want to buy albums and find out later that I don't like them at all.) Having listened to the album once I was already pretty sure I'm gonna buy it. So I listened to the album over and over again and bought the album.

I know virtually nothing about music in a professional/theoretical level but here goes anyway:
The album opens with a strong, dark and atmospheric track (may actually fit any track on this album) "The Pale Haunt Departure", which is one of my favourites. Although it sounds incredibly retarded when I try to growl the lines as Paul's superior voice thunders in the background, but I still have to twist my face into an evil grin and try to do it sometimes (and just hope no one's listening). After the first track the second one will grab you and won't let go once the guitars have rammed their brutal first stabs through your skull. The dark atmospheric feeling is present through the entire album with brutal, death metal like elements mixed with certain softness and calmness. It's a hard task to find any album without some mediocrity here and there but on "The Pale Haunt Departure" those parts seem practically nonexistent. The last track "Collapse of the Falling Throe" starts with a more "doomish" sound and a very sorrowful feeling but I also feel some kind of happiness and relief while the song advances. For that it's a perfect ending for this album.

I understand, and this statement is EXACTLY why we have such a gripe with the way alot of writers and critics label our music, because it's lumping us in with something that I don't think can accurately or fully describe our style and what we're going for. I think alot of people who aren't necessarily fans of doom metal music could potentially enjoy what we're doing, but alot of people won't give it a chance because of the way we're labelled.

Yep, thats pretty much it! Which is silly anyhow, considering how many bands have the word "death" in their name and it doesn't mean they play death metal. But honestly it's more of a case of that we started out being very much a straight-forward slow doom/death band, and even though we've strayed quite far now from that sound and style, we still get labelled as such. Alot of writers have their minds already made up about what they think of us and what we are, etc., before they even hear a lick of our newest cd. That's just the way it goes sometimes *shrug* I'm just thankful for the people who do listen to us with an open mind and don't have premeditated notions of what to expect from us or what to label us as, etc etc.....

don't play the video at headbanger's ball.....it's not worth it...Mtv is gay just stay underground please!!

the album is great, I sharted on my pants when I heard the first 30 seconds of the killer opener track... In the Absence of Fallen grace is my absolute favorite song of all, especially around the third minute on the song, very brutal!!!

all other songs are great, they hold up pretty good to the theme of each designated song title.

Paul, is there any connection of the song Swallowed by the moon to the doom band Swallow the sun, just wonderin' since it has somewhat a similar title

Not at all. I had never heard of the band Swallow the Sun until after Pale Haunt was released. Besides, why would I write a song about another band? haha! Did you read the lyrics? :loco:

Paul I only meant the song title cuz they sound familiar with the song and the band, and yes I've read the lyrics

*fixed.

thanx, couldn't have it better, but the record company are really pushy about music videos to get the word out of the band, but they should just let the street team handle about promoting November's Doom

oh and Paul, I bought your CD Paul Haunt Departure used I don't know why the previous guy dumped this gem, I was going to get the original, but I had a 25$ budget on buying Cd's so I had to do it to get the Into Eternity-Buried into Oblivion

I wonder if I bought the CD Used does your band or label get profit off at the used CD?

I was just busting on you a bit. :)

MTV would not make a band like us less underground, it would expose us to a lot of people who would normally not give us a second look. It's a marketing tool like anything else. I look at videos like movie previews. You get a taste of what's on the CD. I'm a fan of videos, and would just love it if people had to chance to see ours.

No one profits off of a used CD, except the store selling it. It's not counted as a sale in a resale shop. We're not in it for the money, so as long as you own it, and enjoy it, i'm happy.

Plus, if Verano digs the disc, then he might be enticed to dig up past releases. :Spin:

thanks for the compliment ,but still I should send you some money, even though your not in it for the money, it doesn't feel right....your band went through all the trouble making the album with such expertise, but if you say so....then I won't, I'll buy some shirts and the upcoming shirt depicting the cover art from the album. oh and paul how much will the Pale haunt Departure shirt cost?

The best way to support us is to keep picking up merch and our other CDs as circus just mentioned. I'm not sure on the price of the shirts. I was told the other day an update on their arrival is coming. Once we find out the total cost, we'll set a price. The forum will be the first to know!

I don't know what can be said about it that hasn't been said already.
I will leave it at this.

1) It will be high on my top 10 list for 2005
2) All tracks have been loaded to my MP3 player (which is only 256MB), and will not be taken off or replaced by other tracks anytime soon
3) Dark World Burden, if the band or label chose do so, would easily be your "break through" track
