THE PALE HAUNT DEPARTURE - FAN reviews

Along with "Existence" of Dark Suns, "The Pale Haunt Departure" is my favorite album 2005 so far.

Every note and chord seems to be legitimate where it is.
The vocals just impress me throughout the whole album.
The guitars create such a heavyness, especially in Autumn Reflection. Great work of Dan as mixing engineer (or whatever it is called) (as we are already talking of Dan: the solo in Dark World Burden :worship: :worship: )

No song has a lower quality. Every Track is outstanding and is able to convince with own and unique facets.

Sorry, for my bad english.

Heya brother! Glad to hear from you, I do hope you make it out to see us at JJ Kelleys, it'd be cool to hang out and shit.
Yep, lord knows I've been playing in B-flat for as long as I can fucking remember haha. It's not even considered that low of tuning anymore compared to when we started doing that shit. Once in a while I will whip out a Dead Serenade riff at practice just to make Brian smirk haha

Glad you liked the video! We'll have to get a disc to you next.

Thought it was time to spread some love.

Chicago’s Novembers Doom are possibly one of the more underrated metal acts around. They’ve been honing their dark metal meets melancholic doom craft for the last ten years, but it’s only since 2002’s awesome ‘To Welcome the Fade’ album that people started to take notice. No doubt, with this new one, a whole new clutch of fans will be unearthed. And boy, are they in for a treat.

With five full lengths under their collective belts, Novembers Doom have matured and improved with every release. I’ve been particularly enamoured with these guys since 2000’s ‘The Knowing’ – an album that first displayed their distinctive heavy melancholy thread embedded within their death/doom laden riff quota. ‘To Welcome..’ developed upon this style to the point where they finally ‘found’ their sound. Whilst not quite as ‘Doom’ laden as their moniker might suggest – for me they’re a more melodic dark metal meets melancholic gothic band – it is clear that fans of early Katatonia, Anathema, Opeth and Paradise Lost (circa Icon) will revel in everything that ‘The Pale Haunt Departure’ has to offer.

Released earlier this year in America by their parent label ‘The End Records’, some overdue world wide recognition is now assured with UK’s ‘Candlelight Records’ picking the album up for the rest of the planet. If you’ve never heard this band before, their most striking aspect that you need to recognise is that they, like Opeth and Anathema, have a stunning ability to fuse massive heavy sections with melancholic, emotionally drenched quieter passages. And they just kill you!! But rather than exist as mere copyists, Novembers Doom have uniqueness about their sound that makes them stand alone as leaders in creating dynamic and thoroughly captivating dark emotional metal. Led by the stark, confronting vocals from main man Paul Kuhr; his voice (a combination of death and clean), his compositions deal in both bleakness and beauty in equal measures.

Kuhr’s band is also a fair collection of musicians too. Guitarists Larry Roberts and Vito Marchese pull out some of heaviest riffs you’ll hear this year. Massive thundering chords aplenty. And with Drummer Joe Nunez providing a simply pounding bottom end, the whole impact of ‘The Pale..’ sounds incredibly dense and powerful. But as good as these guys can play, it is the albums over production that allows the power of this band shine. Seriously, if you just cannot resist massive heavy reverb and the crushing weight of metallic guitars on eleven, this album is freaking HUGE!! For this you can blame to main protagonists – producer/mixer Mr.Dan Swano and mastering from Mr.James Murphy. Nothing else needs to be said about how good this album sounds. One of the best HEAVY productions you’ll hear this year and the next!!

With a slew of emotionally draining, honest and heartfelt compositions, ‘The Pale Haunt Departure’ is easily the equal, if not an improved developmental progression on ‘To Welcome…’.At the very least it is a more atmospheric and epic inspired affair. Yes, the feel and atmosphere of this disc is also decidedly downbeat, dark and gloomy, but if you are a fan (like me) of such powerfully delivered music, ‘The Pale Haunt Departure’ is essential. Right down to the stunning artwork, I cannot recommend this disc highly enough. If for nothing else, everyone should buy it just to hear how a professional modern metal production should sound. Excellent, excellent band!!

Hi peeps. First post on this here ND forum but it won't be my last :D

I bought The Pale Haunt Departure yesterday in Manchester, UK (I was on my way home after seeing Opeth play there the night before) not so much on a whim but without having a clear idea of which cd I was gonna pick up and I'm really glad that I spent my hard earned readies on this excellent album :headbang:

I was aware of ND but with so much music around these days it's not always possible to check out all the bands but once I noticed it in the racks then I decided to take the plunge. I've played it 3 times so far and I'm loving it and I reckon it'll easily become one of my fave albums of this year (along with Ghost Reveries and the already mentioned by a previous poster Dark Suns - Existence).
The songwriting is very strong and the performances and production are out of the top drawer. I will be checking out the back catalog and it's a real shame that the UK dates have been cancelled cos I could probably have made the Bradford show. Still there's always another time.

Hey there, thanks for stopping by and offering those kind words! As for the UK shows, we WILL play the UK, we're making sure now that we'll have all the necessary legalities and shit sorted out in time so we can book another trip, and hopefully we'll have more shows booked than we did initially. We want to get over there but we want to do it properly, and make sure it's as hassle-free and worth the trip as possible. With any luck, we'll have something to announce in the near future, so check back with us.

That's good to hear. I fully understand the need to get everything sorted out (especially finances) and make sure that everything you need for a sucessful tour is in place.
If one of the gigs you organise is in the north of England then you can pretty much count on us being there :headbang:

I heard this cd way back in May 2005.
I heard it on a BW&BK sampler cd and I thought the song (from a band which I had never heard of) warranted a chance.
I've had almost a full year to enjoy PHD now. I've said ever since I bought it--BEST CD OF THE YEAR. It's a freaking masterpiece. It's never more then two or three days from being replayed.
I cannot recommend this enough. Everyone who I know who enjoys metal is told about it.
Cheers and Hazah to you magnificent bastards!

Let me introduce myself, I am Arline Paul's wife & mother to Rhiannon Autumn. Its very late so if this sounds goofy its because this is my first post ever & its 2:00 in the morning. Since the boys are in the studio recording the next one I figured I still have time to put in my 2 cents. I truly love TPHD, I had thought that I would miss Eric & the female vocals but I didn't. Larry has done an amazing job since The Knowing & the cd's just keep getting better. I haven't been able to listen to TWTF for a long time, it upsets me greatly. So the songs on TPHD are somewhat a little bit easier for me to digest. I will always love Paul & Larry for writing Autumn Reflection, its simply amazing. I cried the first time I heard it. Its haunting really. I am in such awe of anyone who can write a song & put there feelings out there. These songs have alot of emotion to them. I like how there isn't a million things going on & you can actually here the notes. The song that I actually couldn't stand in the beginning & love now is Collapse. I listen to ND constantly & I am truly a fan. I always tell Paul what I think good or bad, I sugercoat nothing. I have seen every incarnation of this band & I think the music just keeps getting better. I know this stuff is not for everyone, nor should it be. This album is so complete from beginning to end. Paul thank you for Dead Leaf Echo, I couldn't have asked for a nicer apology. P.S. did you all know that its Rhiannon in the beginning of TACE's?
I am not really pc savvy so it might be a long time before I post again.
Well I think I'll get back to my Smallville marathon (that guy is really hot!!!!) Arline

:zombie:

Hey Arline, great to see you here, thanks for sharing your thought's with us about the albums,I couldn't agree more with you TWTF is definitely by far out the most emotional album I've ever heard!
It makes me cry all the time as well..
I wasn't quite sure it was Rhiannon's laughter on TACE's,so thanks for clearing that up..she sounds lovely!..:)

Hope you stick around girl!..
