Sorry Larry, Dan made me do it!
Seriously though, I've been listening to "TPHD" a fair bit again, lately. I've been fighting the hot weather with lots of doom inspired music, mwaha!
I learned about you guys through this release and it was a genuine punch in the face. One of the positive kind, mind you (and way better than a kick in the nuts, too). The variety in music and maturity in lyrics are of a combination I've rarely seen in metal or music in general for that matter.
I'm almost afraid to say "Through a Child's Eyes" is sort of the low point of the album for me, though. I understand most people adore that song. There's something about it that makes it hard for me to enjoy. Not because it happens to be the most "non-metal" song on the album, in fact that would be a positive side, but I miss dynamic in it. I don't know how to explain it otherwise; it's more of a gut feeling, really. I'm a big fan of Paul's vocals in all styles he performs in, so it's not that either. (The man can actually *sing*. That helps!) There's something about the chorus though. Again, hard to explain.
It's dangerous to downplay a song, especially if you really mean no harm with it. Also, I'm aware of what lies at the core of the song. It's less hard to criticise a song that has "We poop on Christ" written all over it if you know what I mean. The point being I'm really referring to a general feeling and not the fact that it wouldn't be well composed or have pointless lyrics - none of which is true, obviously.
Anyway, I was never really planning on writing anything in this thread, but then Dan had to go and post that link and make me want to write something so off topic I wanted to put it straight.
BTW, I don't know if I wrote this elsewhere already, but "Swallowed by the Moon" is by far my fave ND song. "Do you remember...?!" Plus it has one of the best starts of a song I know. Powerful music to go with powerful lyrics, indeed. Chapeau!
