NAD's idea, executed by yours truly because I couldn't wait for him to create the thread. List your top 10 albums. Impossible task, I know, but hey.

My list consists mainly of albums that I have a nostalgic relationship with, and it'll probably be totally different the next month (I'm in a taste change process):

1. Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
2. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
3. Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
4. Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh
5. Decapitated - Nihility
6. Borknagar - Empiricism
7. Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia
8. Cannibal Corpse - Tomb Of The Mutilated
9. Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
10. Exhumed - Anatomy Is Destiny

ALMOST MADE IT TO THE LIST: Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon, Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten, Deeds Of Flesh - Mark Of The Legion, Hate Eternal - Conquering The Throne, Troll - Drep De Kristne, Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (yes).

2. At the Gates "The Red in the Sky is Ours"

I've saved this little gem for those dark, rainy autumn evenings/nights, together with Empyrium's "Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields", and I am (hopefully) soon to grasp the magic found on those two discs. I figured it'd be stupid to try to get into "The Red.." in the middle of the summer. It's really not a summer album.

*shakes head* So is this based on today's personal preference, nostalgia, or what you think constitutes as revolutionary brilliance/genius?

No, this thread needs to list parameters for which you're deciding because through nostalgia alone I could list 20 albums at equal weighting.

I object! :loco:

*scratches head*

Top 10 metal are even harder because it means I have to have 10 metal albums that are 10/10 BUY OR GOD DAMN DIE!!!!!1111 which I uhhh, don't really. :) Anyhow, the list of contenders:

Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
Morbid Angel - Domination
Ulver - Bergtatt
Taake - Nattestid...
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Slayer - Divine Intervention
Sepultura - Chaos A.D.
Hypocrisy - Abducted
Machine Head - The More Things Change

This list leaves out metal-ish groups like Alice in Chains, Kyuss, White Zombie, and others even though most rank higher than these albums. Also, only about half of these are 10/10 albums, I'm very picky in giving metal a perfect score.

MAYHEM - DE MYSTERIIS DOM SATHANAS
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Metallica - The first four
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon
Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
Now I won't pick any more it's too hard I'll die

@ Jay: It's based on personal taste exclusively, I don't care if an album has been a milestone in metal music or not - if I think it's good, that's the only thing that matters. It's basically meant to be your top 10 EVAR list, and no, it doesn't necessarily have to be based on nostalgia. For instance, I don't listen to "Tomb Of The Mutilated" that much nowadays, but if I feel the need to listen to it, I know that I'm in for an asskicking listen. Basically, albums that you have listened to A LOT, and still don't get tired of.

@ Erik: Where's "Goat Horns"?

Also you get into situations where people don't include stuff that is easily "10/10 classic buy or die" material just because they don't necessarily listen to it as much anymore.

Somehow you have to nominate albums based on how great you thought they were at their individual peaks of glory, not what you listened to last week.
Very true. The only score that has changed from mine is Divine Intervention from a 10/10 then to probably 9/10 today (Circle of Beliefs sucks). That leaves only 4 albums in my list that were ever 10/10, maybe 5 if I count Chaos A.D. (has bobbled between 9/10 and 10/10 for so many years I gave up on a decision).

I thought the idea was "Top 10 albums of all time no matter what style...."

Watain - Casus Luciferi
Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice
Ondskapt - Draco Sit Mihi Dux
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

After that, who knows......................................................................

1.In The Woods... - Omnio
2.Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
3.Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine/Terria
4.Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane
5.Rakoth - Jabberworks
6.Agalloch - The Mantle
7.Empyrium - Weiland
8.Isis - Oceanic
9.Obtained Enslavement - Witchcraft
10.Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris

Not in any particular order:

At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours
Ulver - Bergtatt
In The Woods - HEart of the Ages
Behemoth - Svantevith - Storming Near The Baltic
Borknagar - S/T
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
Opeth - Morningrise
The Haunted - S/T
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Old Man's Child - In The Shades Of Life MCD <--just MCD but great stuff!

I thought that was the idea as well, but this is henrikmain's thread, I'm just going to try and follow the rules. :loco:

This really need more time spent over it, but here's mine off the top of my head:

1) Empyrium - Songs of Moors and Misty Fields
2) Agalloch - Pale Folklore
3) In the Woods... - HEart of the Ages
4) In the Woods... - Omnio
5) Empryium - A Wintersunset
6) The Gathering - Mandylion (seems rather out of place!)
7) Helheim - Jormundgand
8) Nargaroth - Geliebte des Regens
9) Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
10) Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane

I'll think about it more tomorrow actually. That's just what I can come up with now. A couple of those need to stand the test of time (Drudkh, Nargaroth) but they probably will.

I thought that rating your "top 10 albums no matter what style" is an impossible task, so yeah.. :erk:

Not at all, refer to my list for an example :)

Heh. My list would probably consist of four metal albums, four German punk albums, and two Swede-punk classics (Millencolin's "Life On A Plate" and Randy's "There's No Way We're Going To Fit In" )

What an apt name.

:tickled: It's probably amongst my top three records ever. I am a weird person. Enjoy your new TRYKKBLYANT with integrated RUBBER (*) and the BINDERS. And the 50 NOK. I would have sent some more money, but you don't accept coins, so :loco:

I could do a top 25 easily, since about that many albums I own are 10/10. Although honestly I can only rank the top 3, the rest are in random order.

1. Tool - ÆNIMA
2. Danzig 4p
3. George Harrison - All Things Must Pass

I'll do this in another thread some other time.

Basically this is my usual Top 10 band list with my favourite album by each listed - amounts to the same thing! :D

1. Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
2. Judas Priest - Painkiller
3. ManOwaR - Battle Hymns
4. Black Sabbath - Paranoid (ok, I chose this over Heaven & Hell for historical significance)
5. Deep Purple - Machine Head
6. Slayer - Reign In Blood (again, chosen over my other faves for hist. sig.)
7. Whitesnake - Ready & Willing (again!)
8. Rainbow - Rising
9. AC/DC - Back In Black
10. The Eagles - Hotel California (ok, I got stumped. Everyone should know this album anyway)

I can't do it. I would have to take into account every album released from 1970 onwards (that I've heard), plus the fact that I've been listening to metal since 1984.

Even when doing this on personal taste alone, I respectfully bow out. Some of these lists are quite interesting though, even if they do span about 3 years worth of music. :loco:
