Lessee... Mine spans 1987 to 1999, with a heavy focus around 93-95.
Yeah, but it implies that one album would score a 10/10, and another could score 9.999/10 and therefore not make the list. However, that 9.999/10 album could very well be a 10/10 on the next listen....it's all too definitive. :tickled:

My list would need a disclaimer: All based on personal taste as of the LAST 24 HOURS. Let me think now....:Spin:

1994 is the greatest year for metal and music in general. At least during my lifetime.

1) Ulver - Bergtatt
2) Vintersorg - Ödemarkens Son
3) Kayo Dot - Chiors of the Eye
4) Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
5) Solefald - In Harmonia Universali
6) Woods of Ypres - Against the Seasons
7) Orphaned Land - Mabool
8) Melechesh - Sphynx
9) Opeth - Morningrise
10) Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

Hm well Ill give it a try, despite my reservations about ranking and objectifying music.

Metal only and based really on only my own personal tastes:

Fear Factory Demanufacture
Godflesh Streetcleaner
Crowbar Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane

and of course... Bathory - Hammerheart... no list is worthy of this classic.

the funny thing about these lists is that you can tell who is an old fart and who is not.
mine will consist of mainly 80's releases ... lost touch with metal from about 1994 - 2001 ... then some new ones.

1. SLAYER - RIB (i have yet to hear something else that tops this for me)
2. METALLICA - Master
3. IRON MAIDEN - Live After Death
4. DEATH - Leprosy
5. MORBID ANGEL - Altars of Madness
6. CELTIC FROST - To Mega Therion
7. KREATOR - Pleasure to Kill
8. SEPULTURA - Beneath the Remains
9. DECAPITATED - Nihility
10. EXODUS - Tempo

there are so many godamn more ... but these I truely hold close to my heart.

I don't consider the first 5 Danzig albums metal really, same with Kayo Dot (saw that one earlier). Several Danzig and the Kayo Dot are in my favorites of all time, any genre. :)

There are lots depending on your desired tastes. In no particular order...

Arcane Sun - s/t
Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine/The Bastard

and more Im forgetting. My head is starting to hurt.

God I look back at these lists, and I think of all the shit i forgot. Music cannot be ranked- reduced to numbers based on the whims of a brain unable to categorize a thing that is eternal.

something like this:

1. Arcane Sun - Arcane Sun
2. Neurosis - Times of Grace
3. Graveland - Following the Voice of Blood
4. Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood

and...

The Chasm - Conjuration of the Spectral Empire
Golden Dawn - The Art of Dreaming
Hades - The Dawn of the Dying Sun
Kiss It Goodbye - She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not
Primordial - Spirit the Earth Aflame
Aeternus - Beyond the Wandering Moon

Opeth-at least one if not all, probably Deliverance for sure
Type O Negative-October Rust
Borknagar-Empiricism, Epic
Arghoslent-Incorrigible Bigotry
Vintersorg-Cosmic Genesis

Only these are for sure, but in the future, others such as Arsis, Anata, Bergthron and the latest Black Label Society will probably find their way onto this list. It's also hard to even try to put one together at all. I personally don't feel I've heard enough music to try to put together a top 10 that could last any significant amount of time. I also haven't owned any of my albums for more than a year and a half, the amount of time I've been into metal. Is that even a factor? I dunno, it's hard to specify what really makes an album great and whether or not it's even important how long you've had it or have listened to it. What makes an album great seems to be something intangible and something different to every person. That's what makes these lists great. You could absoleutely hate an album on someone else's list, but you still know that perhaps it had a profound effect on that listener in some way. All of the above album are ones that I adore and could listen to an infinite amount of times and be content, that is what makes them special to me.

*head spinning*

I own about 1000 metal albums, and have probably listened to about 3-4000 (wild guess). It's just impossible to be so definitive. However, there are certain albums that will ALWAYS be revolutionary, at least in the way that I *personally* appreciate music. So it goes without saying that these albums are a given - in fact, just assume that these are carved in stone since my CD collection would be worthless without them (in no order):

Megadeth - Peace Sells, So Far So Good So What, Rust in Peace
Iron Maiden - s/t, Number of the Beast, Powerslave, Live After Death, Seventh Son
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains, Arise
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Mercyful Fate / King Diamond - Melissa, Don't Break the Oath, Abigail
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Metallica - Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All
Yngwie J Malmsteen - Rising Force
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Heaven and Hell
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, Tribute, Bark at the Moon

I'm also drawing a line across heavy rock albums and therefore excluding anything from Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Van Halen, Guns n' Roses, and The Cult. In particular, "III & Houses of the Holy", "Long Live Rock n Roll", "1984", "Appetite for Destruction" and "Sonic Temple" respectively are all 10/10 buy or die.

Right then, a more 'current' top 10 as follows (all 10/10 and earth shattering omg lick me dirty priest):

HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE - The August Engine
HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE - The Bastard
EMPEROR - In the Nightside Eclipse
FALKENBACH - Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri
AGALLOCH - Pale Folklore
EMPYRIUM - Songs of Moors and Misty Fields
EMPYRIUM - Weiland
ANATHEMA - Serenades
PRIMORDIAL - Spirit the Earth Aflame
OPETH - Morningrise

And these flicker around the 9.5 - 9.9999/10 mark, so who's to say they couldn't be in the list come tomorrow...

EDGE OF SANITY "Crimson"
BLIND GUARDIAN "Nightfall in Middle Earth"
AETERNUS "And so the Night Became"
NEGURA BUNGET "'N Crugu Bradului"
AMORPHIS "Elegy"
GAMMA RAY "Land of the Free"
EUCHARIST "Velvet Creation"
SUMMONING "Stronghold" (maybe "Dol Guldur" -- it keeps switching)
NOVEMBERS DOOM "The Knowing"
ULVER "Bergtatt" & "Kveldssanger"
WOLVERINE "Cold Light of Monday"
PESTILENCE "Testimony of the Ancients"
KING DIAMOND "Puppet Master"

And I don't know what to do with SWANS "The Great Annihilator". I don't listen to them with 'metal' ears, but I couldn't make this thread without their mention...

You see, it's just not possible to be so definitive around 10 albums, at least not when you're my age.
