The REAL reason why Mikael *IS* God

Mikael embodies musical purism. It's what differentiates Opeth, and bands with these beliefs, from the ones with money and stardom as their true goals.

When you do something you love - money and fame are considered gravy. That's why Opeth's music is so deep - it's the reason for their existance.

Once a fellow prog-freak friend of mine asked me to describe Opeth and I thought about it for a while and said:

Opeth are the purest form of high art.

Yes, I see the similarity to what metalman said. That was like 2 years ago and I still feel that way.

I find all other bands that I'm aware of have the impurity of commercialism which impedes and clouds the true art/emotion. Since this art/emotion is what I'm looking for (well, and techincal chops too I suppose, like any musician) I am extremely disgusted by commercial music, particularly blatantly commerical shit (ie. Dream Theatre).

Even my 2 other fav bands, Yes and Genesis, some of the grand masters and forefathers of art-prog I think, are complete fucking commerical cheese on like 85% of their fucking albums. Opeth are commerical cheese like 0% of the time. I think that's why Opeth are the only band that's been able to hold my interest and not make me want to puke for years now.

With such mentions on this board i attempted to download some Yes or Genesis songs a few months ago, and ended up with their commercial stuff which didnt seem art-prog at all. So if you could help me out with a song name or two i'd be greatful?

why the fuck every fucking word that comes out of Mikeal's fucking mouth in fucking interviews is fuck?
he sounds like Slipknot band members...
but he's a good writer (and vocalist...) so I forgive him :)

I don't use the word fuck too often, and it is true that people deem this a lower form of intelligence. Some think swearing is cool.

We're surrounded by society which denounces fuck, shit, and like words as"bad", "swears", etc. Because of this, I choose not to use the words too often -unless I get mad - then they spew out. But the concpet of lower intelligence is from those with lower intelligence - it's just a word.

And by the way - I like a good fuck.:D

For Genesis, most stuff off the albums
-Foxtrot
-Selling England by the Pound

is really really cool art-prog. These 2 albums have some crap as well, but most of it is fantastic so if you get a shit song just grab another one, the longer the better. The only titles I can remember are:

"Fifth of Firth" - this is an absolutely fucking incredible tune which will surely have you shitting yourself after you've heard it a few times and warmed up to it. It's on Selling England by the Pound. I play drums and I think Phil Collins is a fucking GOD, but all the playing is freakin phenomenal. Interestingly (since Peter Gabriel is a professed buddhist), the lyrics to this song tell the tale of prince siddartha's transformation from a sheltered political figurehead to "buddha". Beautiful lyrics, great tune, haunting, psychedelic, surreal, super-proggy, definitely one of my favourite songs ever.

"Watcher of the Skys" - incredible

"Supper's ready" - 20 mins of bizarre fucking theatrical insanity, not for the faint of heart.

There are others as well. Don't download "..wardrobe", it sucks donkey dick. The final song on Selling England by the Pound is fucking amazing, but I forget what it's called, another 20 minute prog materpiece, hard to get into but soooo worth the effort.

There is a Genesis album I've been meaning to get that I hear is also amazing, it's called Nursery Cryme. Trespass is also cool, not as proggy but extremely artsy and original. If you are going to by any Genesis album get Foxtrot, you'll love it.

As for Yes, they had 2 really incredible albums which will probably remain the greatest prog albums of all time if you took a vote in the prog community. If you love prog (I mean truely and dearly LOVE prog), don't bother downloading these, go fucking buy the CD's! They are:
- Relayer (the most amazing rock-prog album ever)
- Close to the Edge (the 2ond most amazing rock-prog album ever)

The playing on these albums is simply beyond words and if you really really love music for the art of music these albums will leave you absolutely blown away. I'm not exaggerating here. Both these albums have the title track taking up about half of the album and they are in the level of godliness. Yes are clearly the most talented fucking prog band ever and if anyone disagrees with then then you are an idiot! heheh, just kidding.

Hemispheres by Rush is another one of those truly special super-proggy albums that has always held a special place in my heart.

Shit, just thinking about these albums gives me tingles.

Rainbow Demon: "...Yes father. *Puts on MAYH*
Righteous Rastafalien: "Very good my son." *Begins lubing penis*

 How silly of you. :p

Metalman: "When you do something you love - money and fame are considered gravy."

Mikael said something almost IDENTICAL to this in an interview in LotFP. He called it a "...good side-effect."

The mere reflection brought disgust.
No ordeal to conquer, this firm slit.

Hey, I went home for lunch and played Relayer and I had quite the musical experience. While listening to it it occured to me how absolutely and completely fucked up this album is, much of it would definitely sound like noise to the average "normal" music listener.

In short, this album is not for people who would (for example) think that dream theatre is true art-prog, it's much more symphonically whacked, dischord-ish, and a million times less 'structured' (whatever you interpret that to mean, heheh).

I'm not at all retracting what I said about this album earlier, I mean it even more so now, but I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression. This Yes album is not for everyone, it's not an "easy" listen and most of it is pure chaos. But therein lies its genius.

Stating this, but knowing that Opeth fans are not your average breed of music fan, I think that the stretch to actually liking Relayer is not as far for everyone here as it is for most people (which is in part the reason why I come to this board!). ;)

I think I can say this about it though: if you are a musician and a prog fan you'll love this album, if you are not a musician then the shear magnitude of drug-fueled anarchy/talent/mayhem on this album may seem like a detriment and seem annoying.

Babbling is my 3rd greatest talent ;)

They should know that we’re fucking honest in what we’re doing. It’s not nothing else, the love of music, it’s all that’s in there for us."

Well, DUH! Isn't that clear in the first place? Who makes music like Opeth if not for the love of the music?

With regard to everyone - but especially all those passionate dream theater fans who insist DT is real art and not just pre-fabricated americanized masturbatory bullshit, I have this question:

Do you think ANY band/musician can compare to opeth in terms of
1. Purism,
2. Expressiveness,
3. Honesty,
4. Non-commercialness,
5. Integrity?

In other words, the spirit of what REAL MUSIC IS. Everyone knows what I think already. What do YOU think?

PS: In case you haven't figured this out about me already, a kind word receives a kind word, a harsh word receives a harsh word, lucky for me I like both! :) heheh

As if we needed him to verbalize it, but yes, he is a fucking god!! Whatsmore, he's a real metal musician. They never sold out yet, and I don't think they'll go the way of Anathema (or should I say Pink Floyd?).
