throw an "among the" in there somewhere and yeah sure, that's not the problem, the problem is indeed that i could not afford to pay for even an ambulance if something happened to me uninsured

this shit is insane and should not be happening in a civilized country ever

had they *not* forced him into the ambulance, he would've sued them for neglect.

an ambulance ride is typically $500-1500. Pretty expensive. Also, don't forget that insurance only kicks in after you pay your deductible. Mine is something like 1 trillion dollars so I rarely if ever actually CAUSE MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO INCUR ANY EXPENSES. My premiums, which amount to the GDP of a small country, just go to pay for some other person who smokes cigarettes, eats chitlins, and drives motorcycles.

Gaylord Focker; care to chime in?

I dont know about those figures. The $180 for my piece of plastic was obviously bullshit so I would imagine the same thing applies to what youre talking about.
Thing is, though, shit is EXPENSIVE

A thousand times this. I don't understand how anyone can think this is okay. Yeah yeah I bitch about the failings of modernity but come ON this is 2012 already. We have the ability to be socially just these days, for the benefit of EVERY PERSON ALIVE, but we're arguing over mansex and giant cell phones instead.

yeah, but really...dude would've sued the county had they just been like, "ok, see ya". They did the right thing. Maybe dude shouldn't have been riding a motorcycle? Oh noes! Not my freedoms! I should be able to do whatever absurdly dangerous thing I want!
I'd totally agree with you and Erik had it been illegal for him to sue regardless of outcome. But he can and he would've. We all know it. Hell. Now he'll sue the hospital for his bills AND for "psychological anguish" or some shit.

Oh stop putting logic and sense into this discussion! This is healthcare in AMERICA god dammit! :loco:

You're right on all counts of course. My disdain is for the "don't help me, I can't afford it" bit. Nobody should have to think that way.

Oh. Yes, that's ridiculous. Pretty much everyone I see at my clinical site for school has that view. It's sad. It's on my long drives home from that site that I devise my plans to leave the country

I was having some trouble breathing about a year ago and a doctor here wanted to run a couple tests and give me an x-ray. My first thought was "No, no, no, no, no! I can't afford that!" After I had a car accident in Arkansas a few years back a few tests ended up costing me like $2000. One fucking x-ray was like $400. But I went ahead with the tests here because I'm on nationalized health insurance and I only had to pay like $70.

Once in Nevada I had to refuse a ride in an ambulance because of the cost but maybe I don't have to do that here.

So did you just walk to the hospital? :loco:

One time when we were just dumb brand new parents, we called 911 because we "couldn't" arouse our infant son. Ambulance took him to the ED and he got checked out and basically he had been taking a nap and didn't want to wake up. That nap cost me like $800.

We had to buy one of the kids a nebulizer mask for her asthma recently. The bill just for a tiny little piece of plastic was something like $180. The wife was like wtf and called the company we got it from. She said she was not going to pay that much for it and what were they going to do about it. They were like, "ok, well, how about $40?" hahahaha Wife asked them why they charged $180 in the first place and they said: "because thats what the government allows us to charge". The price of health care has nothing do with real economic forces.

thank you for this post. :D

And meanwhile, the Republican party does everything they can to put an end to any kind of reform. Do you have a pre-existing condition? Or are you still on your parent's insurance? Yes? Thank President Obama. But enjoy it while it lasts because the Republicans are about to snatch it away.

the thing that really gets me heated about this is that our PUBLIC SERVANTS have better health care than the average citizen that pays for it. do you think the members of congress would EVER think "hey, I don't think I should go to the hospital for this injury."

why we don't FORCE our PUBLIC SERVANTS to have the SAME healthcare options as the average citizen (pay pay pay) is well beyond me as a taxpayer.

anyway on a side note, here's something about humanity that should depress everyone:

my grandmother used to have a boyfriend as my grandfather passed away almost a decade ago. he was a guy she dated in high school and she liked his company and vice versa. REALLY nice guy. super kind to everyone.

well, he ended up with some kidney problems and essentially needed dialysis in order to survive. this had been a long time coming and he said previously that he would refuse treatment for whatever reason if it came down to it. well, he had a change of heart and was seriously considering going through the treatment. unfortunately, he had a will and a daughter that knew about it. she guilted him into not have treatment because she would be the beneficiary of his insurance and will. she said "you can't do it. you promised." being the nice guy (and pushover) that he was, he didn't go through with treatment. he subsequently died from kidney failure.

we are officially worse than *other* animals.

That's probably the evilest shit I have ever heard. She should start a band.

i like how CNN made the news of the 7 people KILLED at a "religious school" in CA already second hand news in a matter of hours. Of course Santorum is top news again.

IF this was not a religious school this shit would be front page 36pt header font news for 3 days straight.
