i live in california (northern mexico), i eat mexican food all the time, and i have never heard of this herb

epazote is an herb which comes from the southern region of mexico, so I'm not surprised. Tends to be more associated with central american cuisine, which tends to be rather different than expected Mexican food. Not actually a huge fan of that herb.
