You gonna be gone before New Year's? We're having a small Neverboard meetup for New Year's Eve. Most likely in COCKEYSVILLE, just because. Or maybe at Laura's house in Finksburg.

Doh! I fly out early on the 30th unfortunately, thanks for the invite though. I'm still in shock how much snow Maryland has...

the plan was to tromp all around norcal right? hows that been goin?

Originally yes, then my friend bailed on me at the last minute so I went to Colorado. I've been launching from there all over the southwest- Utah, Arizona, Nevada, So cal. etc. The desert is pretty awesome this time of year so its been working out great. Going back to California for a week after new years and then Texas for two weeks. Italy, Spain and France in May!

so i got this "hp mini" netbook for christmas

comes with windows 7 "starter edition"

turns out with this most basic version of windows 7 they won't let you change the background image

this has survived for about 1 hour on my computer, wiping this complete bullshit asap and installing something like windows 2000. microsoft does nothing right, ever

Uh. Get Mac if you're too inept to use a real computer.

i've run linux since 1997 and work with administering a bunch of web and mail servers i am not "inept" at "real computers"

not sure what you're even getting at

mac os is superior to windows in every way but i need to run windows on this since a) it's not a mac and 2) i want to run cubase and other audio apps that are not available for linux

Cubase 4 runs great in wine on ubuntu 8.10 (the last version I bothered with), not sure about karmic koala though. probably not worth the time tinkering with shit though.

but yeah, netbooks with win7 are pure shit.

not even trying it. 100% stability is KEY when i do music shit so even a little bit of flakiness or unexpected behaviour is not an option. also i use cubase sx 2.2, my experience is that newer cubases are somewhat unreliable and slower than usual in pirated versions because they are absolutely infested with copy protection and need a stupid usb dongle emulator running in the background

the netbook itself is great, loving this little thing. windows 7 is actually surprisingly very fast on this too, it's just that it's artificially crippled and has a really annoying user interface. windows 7 is faster on this than vista is on any core duo/whatever box i've tried it on

so basically:
windows 7, pretty fast, mostly unusable
windows vista, very slow, mostly unusable
windows xp, pretty fast, mostly usable (once you're done disabling everything in the interface that differs from win2000)
windows 2000, very fast, very usable, best windows ever (unfortunately some newer applications require xp so that's what i'm going with)

You know whats ridiculous? Windows 2000 pro still sells for obscene amounts of money. That's how much people loved it.

Luckily for me I have like 66345252500 copies and probably 53425245673425 registration keys (courtesy of a school district who upgraded to XP).

I should start selling them.

I got my hands on 3 licensed Windows 7 Business copies recently. Installed one on my laptop. It rules. Of course better than Vista and I would say better than XP even.
Best thing since 2000.

2000 Professional was bulletproof on the networks I managed back in the glory days.
