we think he was intentionally muting cymbals so he could get away with keeping the first 12 bars, and then recording in 12 bar increments the rest of the song.

Well, I can understand what people are talking about when they say that(Assuming they've never played to click before.), because when I first started to playing to click, it felt like it was slowing down all the time(Because I was used to play faster and faster all the time.).
