OK, let's see if we can get a thread without a fight.

Rules are simple. Post your top ten albums of 2004. I allow one of two ways to do it:

  • top ten of metal only albums + top ten of non-metal albums
  • top twenty altogether
Since I know this is broad enough and leave TOO much space for people getting in the old that ain't metal controversy this is just to post the list please bring the disagreements to another thread or PM.

Now that's an interesting point to contemplate. I take the first release (anywhere worldwide) as the official one. So several times I hadn't been able to check an album for the top ten of the same year.
Do you only consider the local release as official? Just curiosity. ;)

Something like this, not in this special order, except for #1...others change with moods, some fall off and others will be added to the list. But this should be about it for 2004....
1 Ayreon : The Human Equation
2 Vision Divine : Stream of Consiousness
3 Dreamscape : End of Silence
4 Jon Oliva's Pain : Tage Mahal
5 Tad Morose : Modus Vivendi
6 Wolf : Evil Star
7 Seven Witches : Year of the Witch
8 Jag Panzer : Casting The Stones
9 Mechanical Poet : Woodland Prattlers
10 Evergrey : The inner Circle

Here's my top ten in alphabetical order, maybe I forgot someone but...

I go by the American release date because sometimes thats not when I am able to get it until. Imports can run for big money here sometimes and sometimes thats not even an option. For instance, Tad Morose "Modus Vivendi" was officially released in 2003 however I saw no sign of it at all until it's American release in February 2004 so I counted it towards this year. Also I was not able to get Satyricon's "Volcano" until this year when it was released in America and that is a 2002 album! This post called for a top 10 but when I did my overall top 20 Satyricon appeared in it.

At the begining of 2004 I started a list for "best of" albums of the year, adding albums throughout the year that I thought should be on a top 10 list at the end of the year. There were only 8 "best of" (very very good to great) albums for me last year. They are:

Exodus - Tempo Of The Damned
Wolf - Evil Star
Fireball Ministry - The Second Great Awakening
The Wildhearts - Must Be Destroyed
Ligeia - Gloria
Dio - Master Of The Moon
TNA - Branded
Silvertide - Show and Tell

10. Saxon "Lionheart"
9. Damned Nation "Sign Of Madness"
8. Blaze "Blood And Belief"
7. Jorn Lande "Out To Every Nation"
6. War & Peace "The Walls Have Eyes"
5. Dio "Master Of The Moon"
4. Jon Oliva's Pain "Tage Mahal"
3. Brave "Passages" (EP)
2. Magnitude 9 "Decoding The Soul"

1. Silent Force "Worlds Apart"

1.Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
2.Blaze - Blood and Belief
3.Shadows Fall - War Within
4.Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
5.Deicide - Scars of the Crucifix
6.Anthrax - The Greater of Two Evils
7.Damageplan - New Found Power
8.Annihilator - Alice in Hell/Never/Neverland
9Carnivore - Carnivore/Retaliation
10.Deicide - Best of

1. Drunkard - Hellish Metal Dominate
2. Graveland - Dawn Of The Iron Blades
3. Exodus - Tempo Of The Damned
4. Sauron - Thrash Assault
5. The Chasm - The Spell Of Retribution
6. Manticora - 8 Deadly Sins
7. Saxon - Lionheart
8. Jag Panzer - Casting The Stones
9. Metal Church - Weight Of The World
10 . Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice

Yup.

I didn't even buy 20 albums that were released in 2004 (came in at 17). Plus there are several albums that I wanted to get -- but haven't -- that may very well have landed a top-ten spot (Wolf - Evil Star is a prime example).

So, here's my top-ten only list, all genres.

#1 Ayreon - The Human Equation
#2 Orphaned Land - Mabool
#3 Jon Oliva's Pain - 'Tage Mahal
#4 Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Lost Christmas Eve

Its been a weird musical year for me. Most of my favorite bands did not release a full album. That left me lots of time to discover some new bands. And I found quite a few that were worth to time to listen to.

Vision Divine is not a new band and yet it is! Their new singer Michele Luppi has, IMHO, changed the band big time! The result is a mix of progressive and melodic songs that dominated my playlist for the latter part of this year.

Another real discovery was Cea Cerin's album "...Where Memories Combine..." very progressive with both clean and harsh vocals and layered with sound samples. It all made for a very atmospheric and emotional album. Ayreon's "The Human Equation" tops a lot of lists this year and it is indeed a very strong album in fact, as far as I am concerned, this album is his best until now.

Next up are again two new bands; Denmarks Mercenary and Russian band Mechanical Poet. Mercenary reminds me of Nevermore and Evergrey at their most heavy moments. A very strong and heavy debut. Mechanical Poet goes wild with classical passages in their music without sounding anything like the cheesy Rhapsody. There are however a few hints towards Blind Guardian in their sound.

Those who know me are used to hear me rambling about this fusion thingie. Both Derek Sherinian and OHM are fusions bands from respectively Derek Sherinian [of course!] and ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland. Dereks album is loaded to the brim with guitar and keyboard solo's. Guest musicians are Zakk Wylde, Steve Stevens, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Lukather, Simon Phillips, John Sykes, Marco Medoza, Tony Franklin, Brain Tichy and Jerry Goodman. A must for the fanatics!

OHM's album is a live album recorded at a radio studio and this album simply smokes! Of course Chris is great playing his heart out but new member Robby Pagliary [Bass] will blow you away.

The debut album from Wintersun came as a complete surprise to me. The band is a creation of ex-Ensiferum guitarist/vocalist Jari Mäenpää. On this debut album he plays all the instruments except the drums. Wintersun plays atmospheric death metal. It has the harsh vocals but also fantastic orchestrations and choirs! I think I hear pieces of Symphony X, Children of Bodom and Borknagar. A killer album to hear when it is snowing!

Mattias IA Eklundh is the guitarist of Freak Kitchen and makes solo albums in his spare time. When you put them in your cd player you will enter his weird and wacky world. On this album there are no borders. Anything goes! His playing is lightning fast and more than once very funny!

When I took the time to listen to the latest The Haunted album I was pleasantly surprised while still being heavy like a ton of bricks [were did we hear that before ;)] it was also damned melodic. I loved it from the first moment I heard it. Great stuff.

And thats it! It was a fantastic year! It was nice for once to have no new albums of your trusted favorites...but now I am looking forward to new albums by Nevermore, Symphony X, Children of Bodom, Judas Priest, A.C.T, Arch Enemy, Kamelot, Sieges Even and Slayer in 2005.

I am also expecting a great album by newcomer Communic.
Keep an eye on them, you will not be disappointed!

I close in wishing you all a very good 2005! Have a good one.
And keep on banging that head. :headbang:

That´s great to hear ! I´m glad you checked out the album. I follow wherever Bobby goes because to me he is one of the greatest Metal vocalists. Have you heard his band before SEVEN WITCHES called MORBID SIN ? If you all want I can upload their demo from 1992 that I ripped from the tape.
