Ulver - Shadows of the Sun

Empiricism is a great album too, if you want my suggestion:

TAC/Quintessence, Empiricism, Epic/Origin, The Garm stuff...

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT if you like OMGBLACKMETAL then check out the Garm stuff before Epic.

Here, I made this ages ago:

That is from Empiricism.

Phantoms is one of the weaker tracks on the album so i recommend skipping it, especially on the first listen.

and if you ask me.. Garm's albums and Empiricism are bottom of the barrel

Garm's stuff is definitely not great at all except maybe a couple songs, but it depends on your taste, if you're an OMGTRUE blak metuhl gfan you will probably ONLY like those 2 albums. Vortex was the high point, Vintersorg has been good except the um, Epic album was not that great to me, Gods of my World, Soulsphere, The Genuine Pulse, Four Element Synchronicity, Inherit the Earth, etc... all great songs to me.

That reminds me, the new Cronian album leaked, gonna listen to that now!

first of all, you're the man. but how can you not like epic... tsk tsk

 Well, the songs are good when I listen to them, I just never get that desire to listen to them, it's weird. They don't really stick in my head.

P.S. The first track of the new Cronian CD is awesome :kickass:

I can't find any of the songs I want to show you on Youtube but there's a few clips from those songs in this video.

See, out of all those songs, I really can't see what the big deal about Vortex is. He's got a horrible falsetto and his work in Borknagar really wasn't that impressive insofar as it was an impressive album. The sum of their parts is better than just him. Another good example of that is Arcturus' last album...great album but not because Vortex was the singer. In fact, one of those clips was him singing Garm's part on The Sham Mirrors played live and Garm's voice is like 100000000000000000000000 to 1 in comparison. In my opinion, the only really epic and awesome part he's ever done was for Dimmu in Progenies on Death Cult Armaggeddon and I believe Reptile on their other album whose name eludes me right now.

I just don't see what the big deal is about him. VITRIOL's voice from Anaal Nathrakh is infinitely better, especially on Do Not Speak. It's not that Vortex is a bad singer, but I've heard him live twice and I'd say his "epicness" is due to a heavy use of ProTools.

You either like him, or you don't. If you can get into his voice then you're guaranteed to love all his work. Those who do, really, really do like him. I personally prefer the live SM songs Simen sings to the album versions. It's all about opinions though, afterall.

And I wouldn't be talking about false vocals relying on programs to sound better, at least he has the guts to show himself live on stage, Garm has pretty much never done so, only a few occasions (they even needed to hire someone else to sing his stuff live with Arcturus, which btw the guy nailed), and the one Ulver bootleg I did see of him singing live was some horrid, shitty black metal voice that failed harder than a DVD Rewinder machine. Garm is a good studio musician, but he is the epitome of fake. Prove me wrong :D
