Ulver - Shadows of the Sun

Whether or not they are black metal is irrelevant. They make poopoo music. And I'm not one of those "elitists" who go all "For all tid and stormblast are the shit, but the new stuff is gay!!"

I think it all sucks.

You either like him, or you don't. If you can get into his voice then you're guaranteed to love all his work. Those who do, really, really do like him. I personally prefer the live SM songs Simen sings to the album versions. It's all about opinions though, afterall.

well said

At least that's good. I just enjoy their songs, it's solid fun. Not exactly the most genuine stuff but there's riffs and generally nice flow.

Could someone at least attmept to explain why his singing is so good? I mean from a technical point of view, as in, how efficient is his singing and how accurate is he at hitting notes? Because seriously...

Dying whale...

I like most of Purtanical except the Rammstein cover and there are more good songs on the other discs. It's not really black metal I know, maybe 'cause they actually use the guitars for more than dissonance. Too bad the two last records suck pretty hard.
 I didn't like DCA at all, now I regard it as an OK album, and ISD, well I HATED it at first but it really grew on me I find it quite enjoyable. Not enough singing by Vortex, however.

i don't see how you cannot like his amazing, amazing voice. easily the best vocalist alive
 I wouldn't go that far.... maybe in terms of a vocalist I would consider him one of my favourites, he's definitely not a great SINGER, though.

Ok, I think a lot of the music you listen to isn't that great either. SO THERE!

Exactly, the sogns are enjoyable, get your feet tapping and head bopping!

Really, well maybe if you popped Akerfeld's dick from your mouth you might hear better? Hansi sounds like a gigantic faggot too btw, to those who aren't into his voice. Everybody has their owns tastes, and if you're not into the singer's voice then that's just your own thoughts.

P.S. If you know anyone who sounds like him but better, please share! I want moar! Khvost from Code is similar in a small way but not quite as good.

Also, this is an erroneous and ill-informed comment!

From your erroneous and ill-informed point of view maybe?

YES!

Seems people are starting to compete in multi-replying instead of postin' here these days

A singers tone, personality and feeling is often more important than pure technique, at least to me. I don't like machinistic vocals unless they are machinistic for a reason (Meshuggah etc.).

Here we are in agreement. The example I always use is AA Nemtheanga from Primordial. He doesn't always sing in key, but goddamn the feeling he dishes out makes him my favorite singer.

Yeah, his main goal seems to be to intensify the epicness of the music rather than show off his skills which totally suits the music. Their music would be quite flat with a regular black metal or vintersorgish vocalist.

Speaking of Vintersorg, this new Cronian album, except for the first track, is mediocre as shit... I'll have to listen to it more to get an informed opinion but after a few listens I have to say I'm not impressed. This better not be a precursor to the next Borknagar album.

P.S. Post some Primordial please, I've never heard anything by them... recommendations?

Yeah, I agree. Though their music wouldn't be as good with standard folk/black riffing either. While I would agree that his vocals are the most remarkable part of the music, its just one part.

Live, its a different story haha. You can't help but watch him the whole time. I jokingly refered to them as "Nemtheanga and the Primordials" when I saw 'em (breathtaking performance).
