So I hear some loud music from downstairs- unusual, since I'm the only one in the house with a propensity to blast rock of any kind. When I head down to see what's up, I find that my younger brother has discovered the "40 Greatest Metal Songs" countdown on VH1. Being a bum, I stick around to soak in VH1's enlightened opinion.

Some fun facts:

-Papa Roach thinks that "bands don't come faster or heavier than Sepultura."
-Korn's Freak on a Leash was on there.
-Both of the above bands were higher on the list than Iron Maiden.
-Metallica's contribution was "Enter Sandman" off the black album. Metallica helpfully comment that the song is "simple" and "derivative," although they seem to think these things are good.
-The dude from Disturbed thinks Guns n' Roses is all about bludgeoning brutality.

I got bored way before the second half came on, so I can only guess where it went from there. Funny, anyway.

Now, I know making "favorite" threads is a bad habit (the DM one is still semi-alive down there, I think) but I have to wonder... what would you guys choose as the actual Top 40 metal songs?

Also, I seem to have a thing for putting "greatest" in thread titles... fuck me.

say what ever you say, GNR do have some fuckin heavy shit!
("welcome to the jungle" is a prologue for heaviness)

yeah, but welcom to the jungle came out when the parents of almost any "rock" band of today, were born.
compare the music to its time. they were the first to do it.

Not really. Very derivative stuff, actually. I was an impressionable teen when Appetite came out, and even I thought, "Hey, this is kind of classic-rock-like..." And I loved it, of course. My dad loved it, too, aside from the gratuitous f-bombs--a sure sign that they weren't the first to do it. He likened them to the Stones, actually.

I actually saw the end of the show on accident ... I only saw the last song... #1... and it's kind of hard to argue against actually... "Iron Man".
lol well, that still bugs me though. it's like they fill the 40 with a bunch of Korn and Limp Bizkit-esque garbage, and then throw the token Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath songs in to keep some kind of "metal cred"

really, VH1 sucks. it sucks bad. just like MTV. to the person who said VH1 is fun... just no. it's garbage braindead reality TV and those shows where all the washed up B and C-list has-beens and nobodies talk about past pop culture. ("I Love the 90s" or whatever they call it - those types of shows). it's about as engaging as a 24/7 Jerry Springer channel would be.

Found the complete list. The top 10 doesn't really look that bad.

This reminds me of one time, when this guy asked me if I liked Guns 'n' Roses. This was in the early 90's when I mostly listened to music like Edge of Sanity, Bathory, Entombed, Unleashed, Morbid Angel, My Dying Bride, etc. However, I have never had really long hair and have never dressed like a stereotypical metalhead. It went something like this:

Him: Do you like Guns 'n' Roses?
Me: Not really.
Him (looking VERY serious): Oh. I bet they're too heavy for you. It's quite complicated music.
Me: *staring blankly at him in disbelief for a few seconds* ... *breaking up into uncontrollable laughter, while shaking my head, trying to speak to explain myself* ... *deciding it's not worth it* ... *walking away while shaking my head, still laughing*

Today, I would probably have handled it differently, but I was in my teens at the time. ;)
