What is Slip Editing...(I READ THE TUTS!)

I didn't want to be the guy to thread this either but I'm still confused myself a bit. I feel dumb still not fully understanding this- 006 vid shows like how to do it sort of but like not really what exactly he's slipping- but I'm sure it's still my fault for not just catching on, but my brain keeps adding more shit to the equation and then after the concept of slipping I'm just lost...

You slip everything together to keep the phase and to avoid flamming/delay and I may be answering my own question here, but do you just group everything around lets say the snare, since that would be the most common hit drum, with the OH's and toms and then when you're done with that, slip the toms...? What if slipping the snare moved a fill too early or late? Slip the toms with the OH's and then so forth and just keep bouncing everything or will that cause gap problems after the overheads are bounced... fuck...

I'm guessing it's like:

1)Kick slipped
2)Everything slipped- snr,oh,toms- according to snare
3)OHs and toms slipped

and all those steps in segments, correct?

but the whole bouncing thing get's weird for me... I still have yet to try it on my own- I'm used to Detect Silence>Quantize... And that's pretty much FAIL when it doesn't get close transients and khdsfgkjhfgsk my brain :hypno:

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I suck at figuring something like this out on my own and would need like further visual aid with something more complicated like some blasts going into a fill or something and just that being dissected so I would know how to do it- but that's not anyone elses responsibility to hold every noobs hand through basic stuff like this but this shit is driving me nuts because I don't want some lame ass robotic sounding stuff when I get back into recording when I get my new pc...

I think my bitching actually was the answer to my question, just need a confirmation from someone who does it regularly that this is the right set of steps since I am unable to do it physically right now due to my shitty old dell blah blah blah haha... It's all done in my head for now lol

Is this correct? Yay? Nay? Am I missing something critical in the video I've watched 99 times over that will lead me to a forehead slapping moment?

You're over thinking it. Yes you've answered most of your own questions. I'm sure once you try it for yourself you'll be right.

I know my video isn't crazy in-depth... but I am having hard time grasping how anyone can watch it and not understand the technique afterwards. :zombie: If you have any Q's feel free to PM me though, or on AIM: winterskiesprod

long post

As others have said, you are overthinking it. As long as you have a semi-competent drummer, the issues you are concerned with should not come into play too much.

And, like others have said, I slip ALL the drum tracks at the same time. Sometimes the kicks need a little more work afterwards (like on the fast parts), but otherwise doing it all at once is what I'd recommend (without or without the kick I suppose).

Yeah reading that again makes sense. I'll try it on my own this weekend- I'm recording a polyrhythm heavy band so that actually might be a good exercise for the first time... I'll post a rough mix and hopefully you guys can take a listen and give me some input- as for the reaper vid, the connection I have at the place I'm at where I'm on here is slow as shit but I have no doubt that it will help. 006's vid makes perfect sense but I was over thinking. When I actually do it in person it should work out... Thank you guys for the patience and advice. lol@nwright's quote

Sorry to send this thread to the top again, just wanted to thank you guys for clearing that up again. Got to a faster net connection (which btw crashed while I came on here to type this hahaha) and dl'ed Adam's video after trying it on my own and it answered all my questions- 006's video helped translated that to make it easier... Anyway, I've started and it works and fucking rules, will finish the song I'm working on this weekend and have it up on here soon- thanks again for the patience :goggly:
