What makes a band metal, and what makes a band NOT?

if its heavy enough, its metal. nuff said.

and stefan..... since when does it have to be technical to be metal. that is a really stupid comment. there are really great metal bands out there that have simple songs. sometimes (most of the time) simpler= better.

Nightwish style bands - non metal (the music there is based on the chicks)
"Music based on the chicks"? don't you mean singers? There is actually more to these bands than "the hot singer". I don't even think Tarja Turunen is that hot but i still like Nightwish's music.

Why are there so many idiotic metalheads who say things like:
"If it sucks it can't be metal. All metal is good w00tz0rz!!!!11"!!!."

Every genre has its good and bad bands. There are excellent metal bands (Opeth) and shitty metal bands (Slipknot).

Metal is being stripped down to the bare roots of human emotion and exposing it for what it is, hence the sheer brutality of songs that come across as 'angry' and the sheer melancholic beauty of those that come across as more atmospheric and 'sad'. Simply put, its a musical hyperbole of ourselves. That said, I've heard stuff by Brahms and Mahler that is heavier than a lot of 'metal'.
