He wants to get into metal more, but he really only likes Mastodon lol. I told him about Crack the Skye because I heard of it on a guitar forum and he fell in love with it. He looked up their other stuff and liked all of it except for Remission. I pretty much recommended all of the different niche's of metal that I have and he's not really interested with any of them. Even staying in the same general niche is hit or miss. He seems into Baroness, but doesn't like Nevermore and thinks Opeth is only meh. Given he bases this off like one or two songs that I sent him of the last three artists but idk. This type of metal is not my forte and honestly I don't even know what the good songs are. What should I have him listen to?

Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are great starting points for someone to get into metal so have your friend listen to both of them. How about trying him to get into black metal like Burzum,Bathony black metal era and Emperor.I bet he will like it.Because he into Mastodon tell him all the prog rock bands from the 70s since they influence a lot of current Mastodon music.Don't forget the sludge metal bands like Crowbar, Down,Eyehatesgod and High on fire which was the style Mastodon was doing on Remission to recommend to him.

btw, @OP your friend might also like Killswitch Engage.

these are entry-level bands. just because it's where somebody started doesnt mean that's where he'll stay. hell, look where i am now.

you're pretty dumb if you think someone non-metal will get into metal through Bathory, Burzum and Emperor. you probably just "convinced" yourself that you like them on early listens.

that's what i did with Emperor..."oh yeah i LIKE this, therefore i am awesome and kvlt" but then i realized i was fooling myself and went death metal all the way and never came back. still, i remember where i started.

Ok that was a dumb post.I didn't like the harder metal genres at first but as time flys by it keep growing on me and now I like black metal and death metal. Not everyone is going to like black metal or death metal at first but it could grow on you like it did to me.Still why not try the classic bands I said. There very easy for someone who doesn't like metal to get into.I mean someone that not into metal may not like Obituary but they might like Judas Priest.

You have to recommend him songs that are so well structured, but yet remarkably addictive from just the firstlisten. Compared to songs that take awhile to understand since is why he preferred Mastodon over Opeth.

Yeah great rec!1!11!! Put on In The Nightside Eclipse and watch his jaw drop in amazement!
