I'm just wondering, what exactly makes you attracted to Opeth's music anyway?

Well Keith, for me it is the two extremes combined. The melding of of the brutal death metal with beautiful proggy moments. Their music also has a really cool mystical atmosphere that takes me to another place. I could go on...

their music, unlike most, has artistic quality and depth to it. they go past genres of death metal and progressive by utiilizing dynamics well, mixing quiet parts with heavy parts to create an intensity that you can't have if all your music is at the same volume level. their melodies are great too, i'm a sucker for non-diatonicism. where the image and message never really matters to me, having a great band that doesn't have some preachy message or stupid image is a small plus. opeth is just genuinely dedicated to the music, and the music alone, and that is the most important thing.

Must agree with everyone so far. I love the heavy songs, I love the slower songs. But my absolute favorites are the ones that contain both heavy and slow parts.

I remember at the concert in February thrashing around in the pit during the beginning of the Moor and then later in the same song, standing in awe during the accoustic part. No other band I've seen can do that.

yeh its the contrast for me, but not only that, also the gorgeous melodies and riffs that mike comes up with. Im also a sucker for concept albums, and any albums that just flow well from start to end - even if they arent a concept album, it feels like one giant journey.

Besides the dynamics, the musical styles, the lyrical concepts, and the overall sound of Opeth, I also enjoy the mood Opeth gives off. There are very few bands I've listened to besides them that purvey such a grey, cold atmostphere, like sadness made tangible. I'm sure there's a lot more bands out there that have that mood, but the only others that have made me feel that are Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, Bathory, and Celtic Frost, but not near to the degree of Opeth.

well, my primary reason isnt the mix of heavy and soft parts, for a lot of other bands do that as well...most not as well, but thats not the point. I think primarily the creativity, atmosphere and outside the box thinking that they brought to metal is what i enjoy the most. You can argue that many bands have used Opeths elements before, which is true...but no band really sounds like Opeth still...and if they do, i promise its not terribly similar, or quite the same aproach and vibe. Those of you that want to say agalloch, novembre, katatonia etc until youre blue in the face, feel free to do so, but Opeth is a standalone band in most respects....and thats what i like about them as well, the uniqueness. Also, i havent heard another metal band blend heavy metal with classic progressive rock ideals nearly as well as Opeth, which im obviously a sucker for as well.

Hmm, I like the balanced blend of light/dark (who doesn't?), the music itself is very appealing, the fact that everyone in the band actually has talent, the length of the songs, the dynamics, and the song writing itself is amazing. Who else can write a 20 minute song (Black Rose Immortal) and make it flow, not to mention the rest of their material.

A better question would be, what don't I like about Opeth?

And that, I can answer:

Nothing, as far as I can tell. There is really nothing that I don't like about them...the songwriting is superb (as are the riffs!), Mike's singing is incredible, the balance of light and heavy, and the sheer experience of listening to one of their albums in its entirety has no peer (except Tool, which I believe comes close)...Anyway Opeth, not to try and sound cliched, is simply a brilliant band that draws its energy from a place that hardly anyone else can understand.
