I always thought Patterns could be expanded...one thing it definitely isn't is merely an intro to Blackwater Park.
Whats this I hear about Opeth re-releasing Blackwater Park???

I'm more concerned with the reaction this is getting from some of you.
Why worry so much about seeming to get more commercial, or "acting" like those "other" bands you seem to hate so much.
So what does this kind of sentiment mean - that if Opeth wore face-paint, used flames on stage, was on MTV, but still put out the EXACT 5 albums that they've released, that you wouldn't buy them?
Music comes first - period. You buy music for your ears, and if you somehow get hung up that a band may actually make a bit of extra money - join those who "protest" by not purchasing a particular release - or in this case, a re-release.
I think it's neat to get "extras" - I already have 2 copies of BWP - looks like a triplet is on the way.

I haven't seen any "regular" bands releaseing 2-cd special editions, like a lot of the ones I listen to have. I wouldn't call this a purely commercial venture. There's some nice stuff for fans on there. I'm frankly excited to have some new material coming for me to pour over and listen to and watch hundreds of times while ma.. yes.

I think this is more a case of 'people with dough' versus 'people without dough' metalman....
The only concern I believe people have is that when a band goes 'mainstream' it can quite often change the way it approaches making music, by catering to the masses and trying to sell more product, and hence changing there musical style (To dare this has always been to the detriment of a band.
But as has been said, Labels release albums, not Bands. An dwe know that from how Mikael talks ("Fuck The Fans!" Comes to mind
) we know he's making music for himself... and not neccessarily to increase his fan base... so everythings fine by me! The only gripe that I have is that I'll probaly need this new relesase, but that I've been unemployed for a few months (hence 'no dough') When the new albums come out I'll be getting a hold of them anywhich way I can..... but forking out for a and album which I already have half of is more than a bit annoying. Llike I said I'll probably stilll get my hands on a copy of the rerelease, and then I'll gruble about the price all the way until a get home and pop it in my CD player...
Actually, to save time, I'll take my discman with me when I go to get it (To minimise overall grumpiness)
It would be nice to hear that the bonus material will be appearing somewhere on the other forthcoming albums so I could 'skip' an uneccessary purchase, but that's probably wishful thinking...

I see nothing wrong with Opeth releasing an extended version of Blackwater Park. To me its good news and its good for the band aswell.I'm sure it was the the idea of the label to release this,but what ever money the band makes from it is money that the band deserves greatly.
I don't really feel that its commercial and even if it is who really cares? As along as the band maintains there genuine and unique style with out compromising any aspect of there music I don't really mind.
Opeth have the potential to become even more popular and successful at what they do just because there so good at it and because there so distinct and original, and this is why they have been growing so significantly.

Yes, there is a 2 Cd limited special edition (note: not a reissue) coming out soon.
I don't really like the idea of stuff like this either, but we either choose to be involved or not. If we're not involved the label can put something out anyways. We want to make sure it's done right, therefore there are 2 brand new tracks on there. Both are very mellow recordings. They're called "Still day beneath the sun" and "Patterns in the ivy 2", the latter being a vocal continuation you could say of the instrumental, though it's completely different in a way.
There is also a 6 + minute video clip with all footage taken from the documentary we did for the recording of Blackwater park. This film will probably never be released and this was a good way for us to at least get something out.
There will be new packaging too.

Anyway, on-topic, I know where ppl are coming from bitchin about people bitchin (hehe, did that make sense?
), but as someone already pointed out, there's absolutely nothing wrong with things like this (I for one can't wait!). It's when bands alter their sound in order to sell more etc... Incidently, is it wrong that the "There will be new packaging too." part got me the most excited?
I'm going to buy it. I'll just give away my current copy of Blackwater Park. Hopefully, the person I give it to will become a fan.

anyway as i said as long as it sounds good im still buying it, i listen to loads of ''comercial'' stuff and i dont care. but as for the ''if opeth wore face paint...'' lets put it this way, 'if opeth said they hated Indians, went around killing people who weren't of a perfect race in their view and raped loads of women, and released the same albums would you still like them as much?
i mean i'd still probably like them but it would be really wierd and they'd lose something, i mean they're the people that hate me and well i wouldn't be able to listen to them in the same way, and i'd probably not listen to them...
in short i think the re-release should contain more than 2 extra songs, well i hope it does. ideally id like to see them redefine the metal scene many people see today and that would be an achievement. whether that does or doesnt happen we'll know more when the 2 new albums are released.

I'll start saving my money now to buy it. My copy of BWP is a promo anyway and has a hole punched in the back. 
So, this will be nice for me to replace that copy. I am anxious to hear the new material!
