I don't understand why this is even being argued. It fucking happens and it isn't exclusively a good or bad thing. End of story.
As for why they have become an entry level band:
1. It is all relative to what people can access. The internet has given everyone who wants to hunt it down, the ability to access all of the most obscure music. Opeth isn't near
the most obscure at all.
2. It is relative to what is popular. Things like Mudvayne, Korn, KSE, Slipknot have made heavier music more regular and popular. People don't necessarily
like these bands (and nor should they), but they are exposed to it. The next thing you know, they are suddenly downloading "Bleak" off the internet and it is infinitely better. They get into it, and hey-presto, Opeth has become their entry level band.
3. Largely reiterating my point above, people are being desensitised to all sorts of things, including extreme music. As they are more desensitised, various forms of metal seem less extreme.
4. Again proving that a large portion of Opeth fans are raging faggots, is the fact that their music caters to general global trends in music taste. People have become more interested in the melodic and "virtuoso" or "progressive" styles of music, which Opeth are. This has led to bands like Slayer and Sepultura being replaced as entry level bands (along with the fact that nearly everyone has heard them).
