People are whining about Opeth just because too many "other people" are getting into them, right? This is just straight-up scenester elitism, right??

no it's because they haven't done anything worthwhile since morningrise and the only really good thing about those albums was the ass shakin bass awww yeah

Actually it has a lot to do with that a substantial amount of their fans don't listen to metal besides Opeth, and most seem to think that Opeth is unquestionably the greatest band ever.

Opeth is an entry level band, and this means their fans aren't very knowledgeable. At least at first. Then they grow up and become like GoD.

people are whining about opeth because they started sucking a whole fucking lot also because of the cookie cutter anusite influence on these boards

backlash implies people liked this band in the first place.
you must be new here.

o wait you are

back in 2001/2002 people were sucking åkerfeldt's cock like there was no tomorrow. all over.

There isn't really a backlash. I was an opeth fan for example. Doesn't mean i hate them now just because of what i've read of GMD.

They just get mentioned too damn much.

Opeth is played out and over hyped. That's the reason for the backlash. They were played out and over hyped in 1999, and it's just gotten worse in the past 7 years. Too bad, because their music is pretty good.

Hmmm, see, to me, that sounds like Top Forty talk.

I don't give a fuck about what other people like, or how "fresh" and "hot" my music is.

I just want to listen to quality music.

I'll bite. What's GMD??

I personally love Opeth

you guys are probably gonna flame me and think that I think that Opeth is the greatest band ever....not true

I have only begun to slowly open my horizons to more music and different genre(if it wasn't for this site...I would not have really known much about these underground bands), and as if now, Opeth is defintely my favorite...but mind you, I have not heard every band on the planet, like some of you have, and my mind will most likely change.

something sad: When I wasn't into much underground metal, my favorite band was Disturbed, HAHAHAHAHA, now I look back at that band at laugh at my stupidity...who knows maybe in a few years ill look back at Opeth and just be like, Eh, they're just OK.

Opeth is getting popular. Not radio-friendly popular, but they're 5 or 6 times as big as they were when I first heard "Still Life". In all actuality, and contrary to almost every post you'll read here, Opeth's current work is of almost uniform quality with their early albums and every album they've released since. The songs are still ten minutes long, Mikael still loves 70's prog, and they still have great bass parts.

What was I saying...

Oh yes. Opeth is awesome, and the hate for them is probably the most blatant example of "I liked them when they weren't famous, but now I think they suck cause famous bands suck" I've ever witnessed. Opeth is one of the very few bands I can think of who've maintained their creative vision over the whole of their career. Opeth, in my eyes, is a prime example of a band that does not suck.

Anyone want to share an example of why they think otherwise?

I don't know. I thought Deliverance was pretty horrid except for a couple of tracks, and that could be a result of the conditions they were recording in. I do agree with Master of Lightning in that they are kind of an "entry level" band. Somebody mentioned about broadening your horizons, which is always good, just don't get stuck on one thing for too long. There's lots of "better"(imo) bands out there, but Opeth is still decent and better than most of the crap that's out there.

Opeth is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of them - I've only been into them for a few months now, but I've liked what I've heard so far.
