What's with the Opeth backlash??

Well, we've got the phrase 'fucking idiot' down to a fine art, well done guys.

Any band that becomes relatively popular will suffer from the same fate.

The sad thing is that there are many who will actually alter their taste in music to conform with the views of some nerd who uses 'theory' to prove his taste is best. Very un-metal.

calling opeth an *entry level band* is flat out insulting. what are you entering exactly? the important thing is to like what you're listening to, not to then go on to listen to heavier and heavier music because its *harder* or *more metal*. that's like saying mere sex with a girl is just *entry level*, and then before you know it you're sucking off a cow, point being sucking off a cow is probably not much fun, but it makes you more "extreme" than everyone else.

Opeth is one of the greatest bands ever. People who overworship them piss me off, but they are really, really awesome. imo.

Opeth have a sound that is easier to enjoy than most other "extreme" metal bands. That's a fact; get over it.

That's also the case with Dark Tranquillity, but they still rule all our asses.

No, I mean I still like Opeth quite a bit, but there are lots of other bands too.

That's probably the best way to put it.

To call them an entry level band is a bit excessive. I reserve that for the likes of Pantera.

I have always loved Opeth and yes, they were among the first 'death metal' bands I discovered. I also agree with many here that since Morningrise nothing has quite hit the same heights although Blackwater Park at least had a nice, dark feel to it.

I have no doubt a number of people here refuse to listen to Opeth for all the wrong reasons. Who knows? Some probably still do, or want to, but refuse to admit it.

What I do find frustrating is anyone proclaiming Opeth to be the greatest on the planet. can that be said about any band? As you say Master, there are a lot of quality bands out there.

Listening to new Devin Townsend as we speak - far better than his previouis effort.

I don't know. I thought Deliverance was pretty horrid except for a couple of tracks, and that could be a result of the conditions they were recording in. I do agree with Master of Lightning in that they are kind of an "entry level" band. Somebody mentioned about broadening your horizons, which is always good, just don't get stuck on one thing for too long. There's lots of "better"(imo) bands out there, but Opeth is still decent and better than most of the crap that's out there.

I honestly hope your not saying that the song delieverance is horrid, because it is an incredible peice....

I've loved Opeth for ages and still rate them as the greatest ever but I think Ghost Reveries was stagnant and boring with the exception of Ghost of Perdition. And has anyone seen the video clip for The Grand Conjuration? Worst clip ever! It's got every MTV cliche you can imagine!

I thought I was the only person that had this opinion. I have only heard Ghost Reveries, and I bought the album only ever heard The Grand Conjuration or whatever its called. Im more into melodic trash ("cave yer fucking head in") type music, and was extremely disappointed
in this album. I might get around to listening to earlier stuff at some point.
