What's with the Opeth backlash??

Actually it's 'in mist she was standing'.

...and right back at you. Get a hobby

You know what's really funny, reading the title of the thread, and just the first couple posts, I knew exactly how this thread would progress and crap out 3-5 pages in. Surprise! :)

A thread like this will never have an definitive answer, period. Too many people think their music tastes/opinions are the shit that doesn't stink, when often times it is just plain shit.

God forbid quite a few people here have their favorite bands continue to make the same quality music, yet get popular. It would be funny the amount of "reasons" a person would come up with to make their once favorite band the bottom of the musical barrel.

I'm not a fanboy but just puzzled why in the spectrum of the entire metal genre opeth is a major target or 'the' target.

You like At The Gates who besides sucking spawned tons of shitty bands. Think what you want fanboy!

opeth arent an entry level band, in my opinion, even if their songs have mellow, soft parts that are entirely accessable. pantera and fear factory are entry bands...

the gripe i have with opeth is that, no matter what anyone says otherwise, ill never change my opinion that their albums all sound the same. some of their songs are incredibly awesome, some are incredibly boring and the most are somewhere inbetween. but they're all the same forumla of death metal with mellow sections.

i actually think theyre at their best when they play the soft stuff. thats why i think the acoustic album is their best one.

You listen to Hypocrisy

... anyways the best Opeth songs other than 'advent'

April Ethereal
Funeral Portrait
Forest Of October
In Mist She Stands Waiting
The Leper Affinity
When
Serenity Painted Death
Reverie/Harlequin Forest
Nectar
Deliverance
The Twilight Is My Robe

actually, godhead's lament is their best song.

Yes you are because I said so.

It will not kill you to listen to one song a day until you've heard them all. If not i'm going to come into your house at midnight. You will see a fire coming from your backyard with all your hypocrisy cds burning......

!

i'm threatening you on a computer E style!

by the time it takes you do put shit in your hair you could listen to a brilliant opeth song.

You know how much I love it when you talk about my hair.

!

Don't ever threaten my Hypocrisy CD's again. They're safe here with me, at school, not at my home. So there.

By merit of Opeth being one of the first handful of bands that people get into these days, they are absolutely and unequivically an entry level band. ;)

You know the wrong people then. The people in special underground communities are not the representation of the whole situation. I am sure people get into Metal through Pantera, Venom and Emperor much more often than through Opeth.

I guarantee that you're wrong on all counts, conceding only the obvious Pantera. I guaranfuckingtee and will out my first born.

I'm going on 19 & have owned slayer cd,etc.. since 12. No way opeth is a gateway band. If hearing the band when first getting into metal I would have thought they sucked dick. I'm also a lot more mature of a guitarist so I think to a certain extent that reflects my music taste now. I also use to wear metal shirts all the time rarely wearing them now. It's not about 'metal' but music.

Gateway bands

slayer,sepultura,cannibal corpse,fear factoryetc....

Dodens is right. As I said before, Opeth is entry level. I don't know why this offends people. Opeth is the first extreme metal band for many, many people. Pantera and Fear Factory are not extreme. Venom? Entry level? I still haven't listened to Venom. Fifteen year olds don't go to Hot Topic to buy Venom shirts. You can get Opeth shirts there now I'm sure. The only reason most people check Venom out is for historical value. Same with Possessed. You just listen to those to say that you've heard them.

Opeth wasn't in the same position it is now in 1998-1999, buddy. Opeth obviously were not an entry level band then. It began in 2001 (I believe that is the year) when they released Blackwater Park and received rave reviews from magazines.

Um...no? Venom and Possessed are two of the best bands of all time, as far as I'm concerned. I am aware of a lot of people that listen to both on a regular basis. Of course this is not the norm on this message board, but the reasons for that should be obvious enough.

I always was under the impression that no one really liked Possessed that much. I don't like Scream Bloody Gore that much. Since SC is always mentioned as its contemporary, I haven't been in a rush to pick it up since there's plenty of other stuff I'm actually excited to get.

A store near my house has "A Triple Dose of Venom" for $10. I'm just not that into the stuff from that era enough to get it.

I know you're much more into old school metal then most of the people here, so it doesn't surprise me that much that you like these two. But I still think the rest of the forum isn't so much into these, and that's all I really have to go off of.

Possessed is vastly superior, much more compositionally sound, and completely more interesting. I feel that Seven Churches transcends its age entirely. I suggest you at least listen to it.
