I decided to make this thread firstly to discuss some of your favorite debut albums and why; and also to plug some debuts I loved from 08. I can't pick an all time favorite debut but a few top picks...
King Crimson- In the court of the crimson king
Ulver- Bergtatt
Jeff Buckley- Grace
Nick Drake- Five Leaves Left
Black Sabbath- s/t

Then there is bands with only one album, like Weakling and Fredrik Thordendal for example that would be amongst my favorite albums; although instead of these one album bands I was more curious about bands that come out with a great debut rather than needed time to progress to a peak. The best debut of 07 would have to be Alcest- Souvenirs d'un autre Monde imo. There's a been a few really awesome debuts this year to name a few that really cause me eye...

ColdWorld- Melancholie²- Awesome ambient black metal band, and given the band is made up of one guy who does all the instruments/vocals it's pretty damn impressive. This would probably be my favorite debut this year so far and ironically at moments reminds me of Alcest with their very dreamy/nostalgic atmosphere. http://www.myspace.com/thestarsaredeadnow

This will destroy you- s/t- I really enjoyed their first ep young mountain, this debut album continues the winning from this US post rock act. http://www.myspace.com/thiswilldestroyyou

De La Mancha- Atlas- Sweden produces another top act with this Post/Alternative rock band, who marry great influences while bringing a variety of very fresh sounds to the table. http://www.myspace.com/delamancha

I'd highly recommend those 3.

To add to Alcest:

Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Antimatter - Savior
Orphaned Land - Sahara
Gates Of Winter - Lux Eterna
Riverside - Out Of Myself
Pearl Jam - Ten
Subterranean Masquerade - Suspended Animation Dreams
Tom Waits - Closing Time
Protest The Hero - Kezia

I know it's boring to just read a list of random albums, but I'm too lazy to give an explanation of each one so if someone else wants to instead, you're welcome to.

A few others that came to mind...
Portishead- Dummy
Paatos- Timeloss
Camel- s/t
Traveling Wilburys- Vol 1
Satyricon- Dark Medieval Times
Jesu- s/t
Pink Floyd- Piper at the gates of dawn

Nine inch nails - Pretty hate machine
In flames - Jester's race (This was their first album with a stable line-up and anders fridén on vocals after all)
Dissection - The Somberlain
Hammerfall - Glory to the brave :headbang:

pretty dull list, I know cant think of many debut albums that I like right now

Many good one's already mentioned and I can only think of two more to add right now:

Wintersun - Wintersun, amazing epic metal album by Jari Mäenpää. Propably my favourite Finnish metal album

Ensiferum - Ensiferum, the best Ensiferum album, actually the singer/guitarist is Jari Mäenpää here too...

I can't name just one album. So I'll name shit loads..

My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers...

That's about it.

But, I have one left, which probably is my favourite debut album ever.
Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

Opeth - Orchid? Nobody?
I kinda felt that went without saying ;). It's certainly one of the best debuts in metal. +1 to cynic, agalloch, tmv and emperor, all top debuts. I do like On the sunday of life, but I wouldn't rate it one of the best debuts. Speaking of Wilson though, I love Blackfield- Blackfield 1.

Riverside - Out Of Myself
Zero Hour - Towers Of Avarice (so "Zero Hour" was the real debut, it's more like a demo)
Third Eye Blind - S/T
Paatos - Timeloss
Karnataka - S/T
Unicorn - Emotional Wasteland
Scar Symmetry - Symmetric In Design
Mostly Autumn - For All We Shared
The Doors - S/T (Greatest debut of all time?)
