They have perfected their art, and as they experiment more, the music keeps sounding better and better. I don't see Opeth breaking up for atleast another 3 or 4 years, even more. Let's hope they don't prove me wrong.

I know they wouldn't quit after Damnation. They'd atleast make one more fucking amazing epic bad ass album and go out with a bang.

That would suck if they went with standard structures, writing ABABCB so... I dont know average, so many bands do it. But I do like the idea of more prog influence.
Short song structures don't have to be formulaic. Even if you don't like Rush, you must admit "YYZ", at 4-5 minutes long, is hardly stale and predictable, and it's beloved by many, deservedly so IMO. I'm just saying writing progressive music in a shorter format would be a natural challenge for Opeth to undertake. I'd love to see an Opeth album with six 4-5 minute mini epics, toped off by another 20 minuter.

I don't see Opeth doing short structures. It's not so much that Opeth has made long songs since the beginning, it's more that short structures can't lead to new ones as well as long structures can.
The 7 milestones lyrics off Orchid don't really mean antyhing I do'nt think.
In no way has Opeth reached its peak, they have so much more to explore, such as more piano/synth/industrial approach (as long as they don't end up like NIN I'll be glad to hear more piano). But other than that, I do'nt know what else they could do. Martin Lopez has already showed us that he's the best motherfucking metal drummer around, especially on Deliverance. Peter has also showed us what an amazing guitarist he is, and Mikael is just an amazing songwriter.
That leaves Mendez. I'd like to see some experimenting with bass.

I awnt to see them put out one industrial song, or at least a heavy synth song. I just wanna see what it's like.
Honestly, I don't care how long the songs are as long as I can put on the album and listen to it from start to finish with no clue where each song began and ended. As long as it all flows together, it can be thirty/ two-minute songs for all I care.squeegee your third eye said:

I would like to see Opeth complete all touring for D1 & D2,whcih means one more USA and EUROPE tours.Topped off by all of the festival dates this summer,and the shows they say they want to do in different areas.And then i want the sorskogen record to be recorded,and then that project with steven wilson and mikael come out.And then opeth should do a huge epic metal comeback album in 2006/7 or something.
I want a break after these albums basically.I want to feel a bit disconnected with them so to speak.And then once again know what it's like to have Opeth as a unit active in the world again.
Could you imagine the anticipation of not having an opeth album for 4/5 years.
But if they release an album next year ill be pleased as hell.Either way will work for me
