Where do clean vocals exist outside of power, prog, trad, and doom?

Some more ideas off the top of my head:

The Gathering
Wolverine
Tiamat
Temnozor
Skyforger
Amorphis
In the Woods
Skyclad
Anathema*
Lake of Tears*
Grand Magus*

* unless you would still list them as doom

So anyway, outside of how this thread is so confusing (what? ), there's an interesting trend here. Some of the bands listed thus far are some of my favoUrite artists. :kickass:

Hmmm, interesting, very interesting indeed.....excellent. [/mr burns]

I guess what's confusing is that most everything outside of metalcore, death metal, and black metal has clean vocals

Correct, although almost everything outside of "metalcore, death, and black" happens to land squarely in "power, traditional, or doom". Yep, I acknowledge "prog" as well, should have included that in group 2, and by prog I mean Dream Theater clones.

For arguments sake, if group 1 represents 45% and group 2 represents 45%, then there is a 10% sector that divides the two groups.

That 10% features some of the most creative bands on the planet IMO.

Most people here understood where I was going and offered suggestions: Hammers, Falkenbach, Primordial, etc. Almost every band suggested thus far fits into that 10% island.

Even Nevermore. It's a band that is neither group 1 or 2.

If you see where I'm going with this, this 10% region reflects some level of creativity. Why isn't it as large as the other two groupings? I think it requires some level of creativity and unique songwriting -- something of which isn't too easy to come by.

This thread isn't meant to be a debate, just an observation.

I thought you'd heard this band? Slough Feg covered their song "The Wizard's Vengeance" on Twilight of the Idols.

They put out one LP in 1979, entitled "From the Fjords." It has been reissued on LP once (& bootleg versions also) and now on CD too.

I picked up a reissue or bootleg LP off ebay once and it is some seriously good shit!

here's you talking about them: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/3725873-post40.html (you even mention the "smooth as silk" vocals!)

Goddamn, this dropped off my radar. Thanks for reminding me. I remember you getting the LP too.

I love listening to that LP once in a while. The vocals really are something special, and the epic track "The Golden Bell" is just overflowing with cheesy, fantasy-inspired awesomeness!
