Which distortion?

I always try and steer people away from these "distortion" pedals, because they all lead to the same sterile, thin, weak transister radio tone that is shocking esp when recorded. My advice would be try and save and get a amp with a decent overdrive built in. However, I might be asking a bit much so....urm...if I had to have one of those it would be the XMM metal master....I used to have one. It was ok...the death metal one is "heavy" but its cheap and I personally think that is reflected in its tone.

Thanks!
and I have a small amp so it would be pretty effective

does the XMM metal master also have this sound on the guitar from the song by Death called Denial of life? and the POD

you could spend $100 on a distortion, or maybe get a old marshall valvestate head that chuck used to use. they're about that much.

Good idea, but that all depends on whether he can use the head through his current amp. He may not be able to use the speaker off his combo (if it's a combo) seperately, for the Valvestate to run through.

To be honest, back in the original POD days, I heard some pretty convincing Death tones, there was a patch on the old Line6 site that pretty much nailed the Pull The Plug rhythm tone. Being as though the original was all Valvestate, it was pretty easy to get close to it with the POD.

Overall, I'd say a used POD would be your best solution, it's cheap, and you can get a variety of other tones from it as well.
