Who here likes Opeth?

Wow1 Didn't knwo we had so many Opeth fans down on the Symphony X board! I'd love to see them live but the last time they came here i was out of the country. :(

I think my least favourite Opeth album is Deliverance. I think the songs are too long and repetitive.

I saw them live 2 months ago at the Fields of Rock festival in Holland. I was actually close to tears when they were playing The Drapery Falls. emotional music for sure.

I started listening to them at the end of last year and got hooked quickly. In fact, when SX's San Diego show got cancelled last December (after I had already driven there from Tucson, Arizona), I picked up Deliverance at a CD store near the venue and listened to it on the way home through the desert. I've got all of their releases now, and like all of them (including all of Orchid). My oldest son got hooked as well.

I'm not a fanatic (yet), but they are a great band. Lately, when I need to hear something heavy, I put on Opeth. I own Deliverance, Still Life, and Blackwater Park. They grow on me more and more every day and I will be checking out the rest of their catalog soon.

I own Orchid, Morningrise, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation...

I really like them. However, I will admit that I need to be in an "Opeth mood" to listen to them. It's basicly a really cool riff. Repeat ten times. Another really cool riff. Repeat ten times. Switch back to first riff. Repeat a billion times. Start singing clean. Repeat two riffs. Add a heavy riff, and hit growling vocals. Repeat first riff a hundred times for an outro...

It get's very repetative if your not in the mood...

Opeth rule, i love how Michael will write a very unmelodic, disjointed riff on one guitar. But then when when played with the second guitar (Peter) with harmony, or a contrasting line, it sounds wonderfly smooth and melodic.

Black rose Immortal, Bleak and then the Moor are my favourites

I was a death/black/doom metal hater for the last few months. But since I started listening to Opeth, death/doom metal has opened its gates before me. Now I have Blackwater Park and Still Life and I plan on buying the other albums for next month. Now, I started listening to Black Metal and found it interesting too. My death/doom/black metal collection is fastly growing...

Haha they're better than all those cheesy power metal bands.

While you may think power metal bands are cheesy, I think many other kinds of music are cheesy. But of course, everyone has different opinions and feelings from music. I get a very surreal feeling when I listen to power metal, that gives me that "full-body orgasm" feeling, Opeth gives me nothing. Everyone listens through different ears and looks through different eyes, and I think power metal is far from cheesy. If someone does not appreciate fantasy and the majestic Medieval-era, of course they are going to feel power metal is cheesy ... of course, Symphony X has these themes and I am sure you do not find Symphony X cheesy...

I will say that I've given Opeth so many chances. However, I just can't get into them. I've heard quite a few songs, but the only ones that I remember the titles to are "Harvest" (which was unbelievably boring) and "Face of Melinda" (which is boring up until about five minutes, when a cool riff started...but it got too repetitive). I also remember a song from one of their two latest albums (the heavier one), and it was just constant double bass and shit vocals.

I generally don't mind the music. It's nothing I'd ever want to listen to regularly or play, but it's not terrible. The vocals (when clean) don't bother me...but that growling crap is something that I just can't stand. I'm sure the guy is talented, since he has to have incredible stamina to keep his voice from dying, but I just can't stand that kind of vocals.

So, in general, I dislike Opeth.

Yeah, what he said!

What's the deal, KBR? You call Symphony X power metal, and claim you like em ok, but they're not your favorite, then make a statement like that!

I don't get it, man...

Anyways, you know Power Metal has a bigger worldwide following than any other style? You might want to re-think slamming power around a metal community.

I think Opeth is probably one of the better of its particular genre as opposed to everything else I've heard which I admit isnt that much to make a very educated assumption. I prefer the clean vocal stuff like whats on the Damnation album to the harsh vocals, but I have to be in a mellow mood to hear that. But then my moods are more mellow than anything else these days so I am enjoying the softer side to metal now.

but i do wonder why someone who doesnt like symphony x very much would post so often on their board.. not that people arent welcome, they are.. but i dont post on boards of bands i dont like, so its wierd to me is all

Harsh vocals certainly are an aquired taste. I really enjoy Mikael's growls, much better than Alexi and other growlers like that, even though I like them as well. It's the real screamers that I can't stand. I can understand why growling would turn someone off to a band, and that's cool. It's just one of the things that don't bother me at all.
