Who here likes Opeth?

Rock the hell on... Romeo's a better songwriter, composer, and guitarist.

A better guitarist yes, but a better songwriter? Debatable. A lot of Symphony X songs sound very similar due to the way in which Romeo writes his riffs. And don't flame me either, I'm a huge SymX fan, I have all of their cds except the self titled (I'm waiting for the remake of that one). There are many times in certain songs when you can say, "Hey, that sounded like song x." I.e., the intros to Accolade and Communion. Thats only one example. However, its not the same with Opeth. All of Opeths songs sound completely different, at least judging from the albums I have (Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation). Some of Opeth's mellow stuff sounds a bit similar, but when they do metal, its usually VERY unpredictable. Mikael himself has said many times that he dislikes music that you can predict, so he goes out of his way to make all of Opeth's songs as different as possible. In the end, taste is all that matters.

Mikaels main function is as a vocalist...

Not true. He is the main songwriter, and if you've ever seen them live you'll know that he does the solos.

I'd say AMEN only because Romeo is my favorite, but anyone who can consistenly construct 10 minute songs without making them boring (and this is IMO) is definetly awesome. That's why Opeth is my 2nd favorite band.

Yes, he is the main songwriter, but the poster was putting him down as a guitarist, when in reality that is not his main function. Yes, I have seen Opeth live, and yes, he does do the solos, but thats mostly it. Peter does the majority of the riffing.

@Manga-san: What the hell? Perhaps you should watch the video in which Mikael breaks down The Drapery Falls. Even if what you said was true, it still wouldn't make sense. How does lacking knowledge of music theory=unpredictability?

Why compare Opeth and Symphony X? It's like saying "Do you like the way this orange tastes like an orange better than the way this apple tastes like an apple?" It would be weird if oranges tasted like apples, and if apples tasted like oranges. Apples and oranges, that's what I'm saying. Apples and oranges.

Mikael Akerfeldt could not write songs like The Odyseey, The Accolade, The Divine Wings Of Tragedy or Through The Looking Glass if his life depended on it!

Someone posted that Mikael from Opeth does not like predictable songs ... hmm, Opeth's songs are very predictable with their heavy/soft cycle throughout every song. From what I remember, just about every Opeth song has acoustic breaks and heavy parts ... very repetitive! Oh, I forgot, since Opeth decided to release Damnation they are just so unqiue and unpredictable...

Thats because Mikael isn't into power metal.

This whole discussion is ridiculous. Calling opeth predictable only because all their songs shift styles somewhere is quite ignorant. Thats like saying all Symphony X sounds are predictable because they feature blazing riffage. Come on. The only reason I posted here was because someone compared Mikael to Romeo, which is a ridiculous comparison considering the styles of the two are so different. These two bands shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.

But dude, to just say "Opeth are better than SyX can ever be!" is just ignorant, arrogant and stuid. Not at the fact that you like Opeth more than SyX, but the fact that you say it with no explination of why you THINK thats true, is ridiculous. I can deal with the fact that you like Opeth more than SyX, but stop being such a fanboy.

Uh, no, it's perfectly fine to say "Opeth are better than SyX can ever be!" if you truly believe it. You shouldn't have to sugarcoat your opinions lest some Symphony X fan take offense, and you shouldn't have to "explain" your opinion.

Person: What do you think of the Backstreet Boys?
Me: Well, uh, they are not really the type of music that I like, but I have to respect that they are putting out albums, and though I may not listen to them I will not bash them.

No way, it'd go more like...

Person: What do you think of the Backsteet Boys?
Me: They fucking suck.
Person: Why?
Me: Because they do.
Person: Yeah, I guess they do.

I agree with you. If you believe in something, you have all the right to state your opinion. If I think Symphony X is eons better than Opeth, it is my right to think and state that.

As far as me being "ignorant" because I compare bands ... I think that is a bunch of trash. There is nothing wrong to compare any band of any genre to another. I am not against comparisons, but it seems a lot of people here at UM are for whatever reason. I am sick of people stating others ignorant. You can open up a can of worms saying crap like that ... I can say you are ignorant because you do not accept other opinions. I can say you are ignorant because you do not think band comparisons are acceptable, etc. It gets rediculous.

Hmm, lets take a look at what I actually said.

"Calling opeth predictable only because all their songs shift styles somewhere is quite ignorant."

I don't see anything about comparisons in there...

this thread is a waste, they're different bands, in different styles so shut up

Well, it started by KateBush asking if anyone here likes Opeth, and next thing you know, it turned into "which band is better" contest. Come on folks, the only similarity between the 2 bands is that they are both prog metal. Stop comparing apples with oranges!

And just to answer the original question... yeah, I'm an Opeth fan :headbang:

Another Opeth fan here.

They make a great "atmosphere", and I think they have a lot of feeling, great lyrics, although their music sometimes gets repetitive.. Opeth fucking rules!!!

And their logo is pretty cool too.
