I've actually been thinking about this a lot recently. Though I love almost all type of metal, Scandinavian bands are usually the ones that really stand out to me, especially Norwegian black metal and Finnish metal. Maybe it's because they have more inspiration there; Norway has all those kick-ass fjords, the northern lights, and an abundance of forests, the latter of which inspired many a black metal song. And, if you think about, a lot of Norwegian black metal bands have a tendency to make their albums sound "cold", reflecting the weather up there. Same goes for Finnish bands; Finland is a pretty natural country, so the band members have probably seen a lot of inspiring places (perfect example: Children of Bodom inspired by Lake Bodom). As for American bands, most of them come from major cities and don't have a lot of nature, so they tend to have a more urban sound (just IMO).
