Why is it so hard to find band members? v. rant

I completely feel you guys on this one. I've never really had any friends that were into music and if they were, they were never into the crazy shit music I'm into. For the past few years, I've been playing in cover bands with dudes that are 40+ and it can pay well, but I've always been doing my own things by myself on the side as much as I can. I would completely LOVE finding some other weirdos on my level to rock with.

There are so many different elements that have to be in place for a band to truly be good and that makes it tough. You've gotta have people that play good, are dedicated, and get along with each other. I've always had to carry a ton of weight in all my bands as far as ENFORCING REHEARSAL, taking care of the gear, promoting marketing and getting gigs, and basically everything besides actually playing the show. Recently, I've started to just say "fuck it" and let the other band members make a fool of themselves when they don't show up on time or they're not practiced up and forget the songs.

This pretty laughable lol, if you, in the most metallic nation of the world, can't find any good mate to start a band with... well that's pretty fucked up!!
Keep on looking for new guys I bet you'll find them :)

Come on sweden it's the paradise of metalheads ;)

p.s.
been there once and I love your culture/design/music!

Then you havnt been where I live
Here lives only farmers that drives around in their tractors and headbangs Eddie Meduza ( :kickass: )
Nah but, depends on where you live in Sweden. I dont know a fucker who plays or has any interest in music at all... but thats probably cause I live in the complete nowhere

Man, this is the same shit I'm going through. You give people enough rope and they'll hang themselves. They bring you down in the process though. I hate the 4 sets a night cover band deal, but it's better than nothing.

Well I guess you've never been in italy lol ;)
Seriously if you keep on searching you will find good musician.
If you live in a small town maybe you have to rehearse away from your local area.
I live in a small town and I have to travel 25Km to rehearse, not that bad I guess, just 25 mins from my home, but if I don't do this I couln't play in a band.
Anyway I still think in sweden music is really recognized as a good/professional thing.
You export tons of music, something we don't.
Here it is just considered just like something you do on your free time, a hobby, nothing more than that. Pretty fucked up I guess.

Band members is a difficult thing. I was in a band for 7 years and it broke up last year just before i found out i was going to be a father. For almost the whole time i carried the band on my shoulders, along with the singer (which is my wife btw). Promotion, gear, rehearsals, everything was organized by us. After a while it became a PITA to a point we needed to ask our drummer to arrive on time for the gigs. Now i am on the other side...My wife wants to make another band and i am the one about to give up. I dont have the will to be excited to be on a band no more, carry stuff around, listen to others mistakes, spend money eheheh And most importantly, look for GOOD band members. Just to remember how tryouts were...ugh!

But, keep looking and you will find some people like you...it may take time but youll find!

I've been trying to get my current band functioning for over a year now without any sucsess. I play bass, we got a killer guitarist and an amazing drummer. We can pump out songs and play reguarly. Problem is that I live in Salt Lake City and there is little to nothing in terms of "metal" singers. I've been playing with this guitarist and drummer for about 6 years now - so we got our shit together and want someone who's as experienced as us. Problem is, the good vocalists are almost always already in a band. So do we settle for someone who's not experienced and try to form them into a good singer, do we just keep waiting hoping we'll come across one - or do we try to steal one from another band?

I know exactly how you feel dude. I am going through the same shit with my band. Practices could be no more important than a monday night football party, and it's never productive anymore. Our bassist acts like we're trying to slam his dick in the fridge for bringing up writing music, he starts bitching like "I'm not going to stand here with my bass and do nothing while you guys play guitar, when I don't even know the song"...and we're like "Um, we don't know the song either. Thats why it's called *writing music*!" I've never been met with such counter-productivness in a band before.

Our drummer can be productive every now and then, but when our bassist (who he came into the band with) starts being a pee-pants about doing anything, he just conforms to what our bassist wants to do...which is usually just fuck-off. Our bassist actually thinks we should start playing MORE covers because "nobody knows our songs and they will like us better if we play songs they know". The rest of us argue that "hey, maybe if we could actually record a disc instead of play through the setlist to placate you, as well as play more covers for your entertainment, then people WOULD know our songs."

Smoke and booze usually preoccupies our "rhythm section"s interest more than being a band, they are more wrapped up in the attention they get from playing in a band rather than the work required to be in a band. Our bassist still thinks all we need to do is get Gene $immon$ to listen to our band and we'll be signed on the spot and we'll never have to work again. He's obviously smoked too much weed in his lifetime to realize that Gene $immon$ isn't looking for a thrash/death band who needs help and guidance in any amount (mostly because of unrealistic members in the band), he's looking for catchy hard rock that can write a ballad every now and then who have already carved a niche and can carry themselves...he just puts his stamp of approval on it.

My biggest complaint about the band as a whole is I'm the only one who does any promoting, putting any money in, providing transportation for the band to shows, and recording. Literally, on the recording part. We have demos that I made using EZ Drummer and recorded all the guitar parts, and on 5 of those songs I actually got our singer to do some vocals. Any other recording we have is from when I set up my firepod/laptop at a show.

It also came down to merch. We had little money to begin with. I proposed we get some shirts to tide us over making some funds while we are preparing to record. Our bassist ended up giving 3/4 of our shirts away to his friends, not charging them a dime or even proposing that they help us out in any way. When I asked him what the fuck, he had no remorse...didn't even care. He still thinks we should get more merch to give away to his friends. He doesn't even have a clue that his 'friends' don't even care about the band, they just care that they have a live jukebox for when they come over to smoke weed.

Needless to say, the band is about to tank. If anything, it's going to fold in order to allow some new people to fill the weak points. I've also started a couple new projects with some other guys because I'm getting tired of the bullshit. I hope it does cave in. I hope they do realize that they fucked up a good thing, and I'm not going to carry them anymore.

Well fuck singers.

There are plenty of bands without singers, drummers on the other hand....:(

Speaking as someone who went through the whole "hey we used to play shows all the time, now we miss rehearsals because someone's kid has a dance recital" thing, I can honestly say I'm a LOT happier now in general just writing and recording on my own.

It's inevitable that bands fall apart for one reason or another. I was lucky enough to have played with the same core group of guys starting when I was 17, right up until our last band broke up about 3 years ago. I got to the point where being in the band was no longer fun because like a lot of you, I was the one trying to book shows, running the website/mailing list, deciding how to put together a demo CD, you name it. The rush of being onstage twice a month wasn't worth all the other BS.

Plus, going at it myself forced me to actually learn how to play guitar and is still forcing me to learn how to properly record and mix :-D So the band just falling apart due to everyone having families, going to school, work, etc. was really a blessing in disguise. Sometimes NOT being in a band is a good thing.

what a thread, the bands things discussed here led to the end of a couple of friendships for me. I used to disagree with my singer alot, but he and his wife (the keyboardist) were my best friends, so i went along with him believing in the music we made. till i got really fustrated and skiped a few practices becasue i would get depressed just driving to the rehersal space. now i NEVER missed a practice in 4 yrs, even with no drummer, missing bassist, no sitter for the singers kid, etc... I did CD artwork, website design, produced the CD's, made all the intricate show flyers, and whored myself to evey band i could, just to get our name out there. we even did a show where i set up all the sound, light's, and ran the show all by myself with no help and the singer lived 4 blocks away from the club. i carried so much gear that night that when i picked up my head and put it on my cab, my arms cramped up and i couln't move them for about 30 seconds.

and i need to mention my life was spirilng down a dark path at this time and i called my singer becasue i need a friend to talk too and he insulted me and the yrs of deication i gave. so i went to his house to grab my gear and tried to talk to him, but he trew all my complains back at my face. so i lost it and called him evername i could think of....

I'm ending my story here, it still pisses me off all this time later...

it took me 2 yrs to find another band worth playing with and i don't do it for the music but for the fact they have a will to go out and play and not sit on their asses like my old band. I've been thru hell with 137 and drive 100 miles to the singers house for rehersal, but it's the only place i've found with the will to succeed. my area is over-run with bands but zero talent, especially for rock and metal. Hell every once in a while i jam with a killer drummer that's like Martin Lopez meets Terry Bozio, but no one can keep up with us. I made a flyer at a GC and listed: Nevermore,Opeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Inflames, and Scar Symmetry. and i had one call from it, this dude called me 3 times asking me if i ment metal like "metallica" and then asked me if i like "Rancid" and proceded to tell me how much he like Rancid and wanted to play like that.:puke:

Now i'm in the mood to bitch about the local assholes who who hate...:heh:

No doubt, it's just hard to motivated and focused when you're in it alone.

there is the hammer striking the nail on the head.
cept for me it's not my band, it's my job.

i'm not sure what draws the demons to the metal. i think it has to do with, people that can play music well, even if they enjoy metal more than anything, are going to play the music that draws the club crowd.

Sneap said this:
yeah but when you spend yrs doing it, seeing not a lot of money, spending months in shitty clubs, away from your families and loved ones its starts to make you think whats the point.

n00b here... was gonna post in ... introducing ....but ...

This thread reminded me of the excellent book 'How to have a number one the easy way' by the KLF ( UK art duo who also burnt a million pounds)

http://www.scribd.com/doc/266102/KLFThe-Timelords-How-To-Have-A-Number-One-The-Easy-Way

I remember everyone in our band read this book back in the day..

KLF say

' If you are in a band you will undoubtedly be aware of the petty squabbles and bitching that develops within them and grows proportionately as the band gets bigger and no band ever grows out of it. All bands end in tears, tantrums, acrimony.'

Self fulfilling prophecy,our band ended

KLF do say that it can be very helpful to have a partner. I found this worked OK, until the inevitable Nervous breakdown / drugs / ideas about singers led to our demise

Good luck necro...\M/

Wow. And I thought I was screwed simply because I was in Nebraska!
Our band has been through 3 drummers. The first was a psychotic that tried to kill me at almost every practice.
The second was a drunk fuck who always showed up wasted.
One gig we played with him, we had to use all of our gig money to pay off his bar tab.:zombie: Less to say, he was fired after that.

Now we have a drummer that can play his ass off, but we lost our bassist along the way! :erk: Its been over a year and still no bassists. Either no one here can keep up, or they can't get their shit together. Thanks to our old drummer the drunk, we have a rule that no one drinks at all before a gig. In the rare case that we find someone who's "pretty good," as soon as they hear that, they want nothing to do with us.

At this point we've just fuck it and play shows without a bassist. Its not the same, but we do what we can to make up for it. :headbang:

as where she swept pointed out:

we even did a show where i set up all the sound, light's, and ran the show all by myself with no help and the singer lived 4 blocks away from the club.

Most of the times you have to do all yourself and not asking others for help.
That's it !
I found myself and the singer looking for gigs while the other band member didn't give a fuck about this.
My brother (the drummer) told me "Because you don't write a song you have at least find concerts" I'm ok ok with that, the thing is I don't write a song because they always turned down my stuff.......
My advice is to put all of yourselves in what you do, if the drummer, the singer, the bass player don't give a shit to make your band known in your area and outside, just make it yourself.
Don't trust musician ;) just do it!

I have to say I'm starting getting sick abut looking for gigs making my band known, maybe I'll give up and and leave the band but I won't say anything to the guys about their "I don't give a fuck" attitude, there are people that can't be "managers" of themselves.
It's better leave them then arguing about something you're not agree.

another cool story about my band:
I'm a computer programmer (asp net and such) so I re-did the website, when I told them: "hey guys I uploaded a script to the website so anyone of us can enter news without logging onto the ftp and modify the pages" what do you thinkthey replied to my mail?
they didn't reply actually, I mean I did something to automate the process of the news so even a dumbass can enter news, it was all in vane....

I'd be so pissed if they didn't give a fuck like that.

Shit, I wish I could be in a band with my best friends.

Can you imagine if we had our own little Sneap continent? There would be so many fucking KILLER bands if we combined members of this forum.

We do. Its called The Online Collaboration Thread". Unfortunately though, it seems to be one of those places that is nice to visit but you wouldn't want to live there.
