In a word restraint and songwriting ability.
And yes their patented dark light dynamics that I never grow tired of.
They use metal's most infamous interval the tri-tone always to musical effect and don't over do it. Or as is the case in many tunes the melody disguises the dissonance of the underlying chords. Lead breaks are emotional and well composed although they can never be accused of being shredders. Maybe a guest spot from that guy from COB would be fun on a track or two. Drumming is great, bass playing is great especially on Damnation where you can actually hear him up front in the mix where the subtle yet perfect for the song bass lines shine through.
Well as for the vocals, that roar is the most recognisable growl in Death Metal history (maybe apart from John Tardy of Obituary infamy, and Chuck from Death ) and of course comes with the complimentary clean vocals that just get better.
Opeth are for me the most interesting band in metal. Power metal and tecnical bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X are better athletes at times. They play faster more complicated pasages. But when it comes to songwriting ability and the art of crafting a tune I prefer Opeth.
Whether you label them progressive or not they make the most of their abilities. And as for Mikael's lyrics-none better. Although I really do dig the latest Katatonia.

So flame on.

Maybe its me, but I don't understand what you are trying to get at...

I could be wrong, but the only thing to flame about is COB. I would like to see them tour together, but I don't even see Wildchild (assuming you are talking about the gutaire work there) wanting to guest appear one a few Opeth tracks. They are completely different sound and a solo of Whildchild ripping notes left and right would jsut sound bad in an Opeth song.

BTW, Opeth isn't Progessive, Opeth is Folk-Metal :P Heh...

Now Opeth is being called folk-metal. That is a development.
Sure they use folk guitar extensively but in a little bit of a twist in the melody department. Even our fallen gods Metallica dabbled in some folk.
Remember Ride the lightning, Sanctuary anyone.
Why are Opeth great musicians. Well tell me and support me.
Then again this is a needless post about justifying our admiration for this band.
Why bother.
Well its a discussion board........................!!!!

Listen to The Funeral Portrait then, or some Orchid songs.

And I definately would not call Opeth folk-metal... folk-metal is shit like Finntrol where you can actually HEAR SOME FOLK in the music... Opeth's acoustic guitar is mainly classical influenced, not folk or whatever else.

What really amazes me about Mike's songwriting ability is that he uses so many chords that sound like utter SHIT when played alone, but he combines them in a way that makes it sound beautiful...

You know, a LOT of bands use light/dark transitions. So in that respect the music is not very special. But somehow it seems more lucid in their songs. The quiet/clean bits are usually just as strong as the rest.
