Nahhhh there's actually only a few real metal genres. Progressive,doom,power,thrash,folk, and black metal are the only real genres of metal.

Well to me genres and subgenres are much the same with the first being more general, they are both styles of metal and reference points. Rather than call all death metal bands death metal, there's no harm in saying this band plays Brutal Death Metal for a more clearer specification.
